Hey gang, quick question for the resident experts. I have an unmodified iPhone. Recently the home button has not been responding properly. When you press the home button, 75% nothing will happen. Most of the time you need to hit the home button repeatedly in or for it to respond and, as you can guess, when hitting the button more than once, the iPhone will occasionally treat my attempt to get home as a "double" tap of the home button (i.e. to the iPod controls). Has anyone come across this problem? Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried a Reset, and if no change, a Restore with iTunes?
If no change after either one, this is likely a hardware problem, and you need to contact AppleCare (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby.
Yes, I had the same problem a couple of months ago, apple replaced it but now its happening on the new phone, this is my 3rd phone already!! (the first one was shipped with a broken accelerometer)
I sent the phone into Apple for a fix, they returned it the same day they received it with the following explanation that the reported symptom was not reproducible. Thanx Apple! 😟
I experience this myself. From what I can make of it, it's crashing. Did not have this problem on my 8GB phone, ever. Have seen this twice on this phone.
I am having a similar problem but only when I am on a call. I can't end the call because I have a black screen. I've left a rather unwanted lengthy message in a voicemail box because I couldn't hang up the line!
home button stopped working, restoring did not work, apple care said one month out of warranty can not replace it, any body had any luck trying to fix it?
I've been experiencing the same problem with my iPhone 3G -- the home button is not responsive when pressed normally you have to press it really hard in the center to get it to respond properly (this is without a case).
I tested it with another iPhone and its nowhere nearly as responsive as the other one -- the other one just slight pressure anywhere on the button makes it work. Is there a spring or something under the home button that goes bad?
I've had the same problem which I thought was hardware related and took it into the Apple store where the genius suggested I didn't know how to push the button correctly.

He had the same trouble I did in getting the home button to respond but claimed it was normal. I was convinced it was hardware but then the phone started crashing no matter what was running and normally stabile programs became unstable and crashed as soon as I opened them. A reset of the phone (holding the power and home until the apple logo comes back) seems to have made a big improvement so far in speed and responsiveness but the button lag is still an intermittent problem - better but not fixed...
