BSD subsystem

I have installed a program in my iMac G3CRT 600MHz running Tiger 10.4.11 that requires the BSD subsystem. What??? The machine has been working flawlessly for about 6 months. I have "loaded it up" with software. I don't have the original install discs. I also don't have the Tiger install discs. (Loaned to a "friend" who never returned them and then moved away.) What can I do? I really would like to continue the use of this machine, AND use the program which requires this software. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Yes, it's possible to custom-install Mac OS X and choose to skip BSD subsystem as you'd skip also some languages and some printer drivers; or is it the one that's part of Developer Tools we're talking here?

Not in Mac OS X 10.4. In earlier Mac OS X versions, the installation of the BSD subsystem was optional; it is always part of Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 unless manually removed, which may not be possible. Unless a specific error message appears on the computer stating that it is required, disregard that requirement.

Thanks Niel for this Tiger+Leopard update.
Now that you say it, I remember it is now grayed during install, impossible to unselect.

Could it be in OP's case, that original version of Mac OS X on his Mac was Panther or earlier, with BSD subsystem unselected, and in this case, a further upgrade to Tiger (using a purchased installation DVD) would have kept the system as is, without BSD subsystem installed?
