iPod Classic: Windows: Computer is restarting when I connect my iPod

Hi,

I bought a second ipod as my old one is having issues. This is an 80gig classic and my itunes is fully updated and I'm using usb2.0. When I plug my new ipod into my computer, I get the windows recognition that says drive found USB APPLE DRIVER and then the computer restarts. It happens every time, and if I just leave the ipod plugged in it just keeps restarting the computer.

I factory restored my ipod and it does the same thing.

Any suggestions? Should I just take it back and exchange it?

Any help appreciated.

ipod classic 80g, Windows XP, brand new - im guessing gen5??

Are you getting any sort of blue screen just prior to the PC restarting? If so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x\[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPS ANDUNDERSCORES)

If the blue screen mentions a specific file (for example, “ati3duag.dll”), let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)

Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:

Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages

If you're not seeing a blue screen (or if you’re just seeing a flash of a blue screen before the PC reboots), we can use the following technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:

1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).

2) Select the "Advanced" tab.

3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button

4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

With those settings in place, does a blue screen appear before the PC reboots?

Okay. That looks to be a USB Host controller driver of some description. (The Google and Live Search results I'm getting for it seem to be suggesting it might be associated with some Adaptec USB componentry. But it's difficult to tell because all the links to Adaptec-related results keep throwing up errors when I click on them.)

If you've got a third-party USB 2.0 card that you've added to the PC, then it's probably worth checking to se if there are updated drivers available from the manufacturer:

Updating the drivers on your Windows PC

But if you can't track down any that way (or if the USB card came with the PC out of the box), try the procedures in the following document for updating/reinstalling your USB drivers:

iPod is not recognized properly by computer when USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I'll try that just as soon as I can get off work. I do have a third party usb pci card in my computer that I added when I bought my first ipod, and I do believe that it is adaptec. The funny thing is that it reads my flash drive just fine, or it was, I haven't checked since I have had this error.
