No wifi re-connect after sleep - It's caused by Bluetooth!

After upgrading to 10.5.3 my Air would no longer connect to my wifi network after sleep.

I have made no system chnages and it always worked before.

After much testing......

Turn Bluetooth off, problem gone. My Air reconnects to my network after wake.

Turn Bluetooth back on and it no longer connects after wake.

Can anybody else confirm....

Would could be causing this and how is it fixed?

iMac/MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

I can confirm this does help. My imac refused to connect. But after rooting out my old wired keyboard and mouse, shutting down the bluetooth and restarting both router and imac it was finally able to reconnect and allow me to post this. I tried restarting the bluetooth afterwards but while it did work for a minute or two it then dumped the wireless connection and refused to reconnect until after I shut down bluetooth again.

I think you might have found the source of the problem but the solution needs to be found fast - I'm not putting up without bluetooth keyboards and mice for long. I have three machine that are dependant on them and only one wired keyboard between them.

I and many others don't have this issue. My macbook pro reconnects to my preferred wireless network whether I have bluetooth turned on or off.

This reply as as helpful as a..... OK must resist urge to flame. Fight the rage, woosaahh, woosaahh.

My system worked perfectly before the recent airport update and now doesn't work unless the blue tooth is disabled. This is a simple fact.

Now, might I suggest that when you post you only post when you have helpful advice that is pertinent to the subject. You do not KNOW that MANY OTHERS don't hope have this issue, you are just assuming because your system still works well. I wish you good luck and your system continues to work trouble free. But posting as one of the MANY OTHERS who do have this problem I'd kind of like to see a resolution as connecting at all is an extremely painful process atm.

I am sorry if you found my post unhelpful but did you read the suggestion I made in order to fix your issue?

This problem has dogged me for months, and I just put up with it. I tried your suggested workaround and it had no effect. However I think I just found what does work, for me anyway. As odd as this sounds, I turned off interface robustness in the options pane. I have automatic network choice selected and it seems to work great.

FYI I'm on 802.11g with WPA2 personal and the wifi base station is set to 'g' mode only. This problem started when I changed to this configuration. When I had the symptom, when I logged in I would see the wifi status in the menu bar first show connection, and then drop. Sometimes I would see it come back a second time but ultimately drop.

I have this problem on my MacBook, but not on MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. All use leopard 10.5.4, all use bluetooth and all are connected to the same router. I never had this problem on MBP (different versions of Tiger and Leopard) while Mini and MacBook I just purchased two weeks ago and immediately updated to 10.5.4.
The problem exists on MacBook "only" when it wakes up or boots - most often it does not connect to wireless automatically. Once I manage to connect, it works perfectly. I tried all suggestions I could find in various discussion groups and none helped. MacBook Pro and Mini always connect automatically flawlessly.
I can reconnect MacBook to wireless manually from menu bar but it takes anywhere between 1 and 10 attempts, one of them being "cancel" and not "connect".

Unfortunately does not work for me. No change whether I shut off bluetooth or not, MacBook still does not connect. Changing channels on the router also does not help.
It seems to be a problem of the network password. I use WEP and MacBook has problems connecting on waking up. However, my MacBook will connect automatically after waking up if I use neighbour's network that does not use a password. Of course I do not like this...

Hello,

I have been having a large amount of problems on my MacBook (Tiger) when trying to re-connect to wifi after sleep (lid and button), to the point where using prefs>network, I couldn't even connect. I could sometimes get it to reconnect with a full reboot but the was intermittent - my issue was predominately on N (which I use a lot) although G was very flaky with a lot of connection dropping also.

Have tried everything, went to the Mac Store and had a new logic board and Wifi card

Upon returning from the MacStore the sleep issue was still a problem and having read this post, I played around with my bluetooth and found that after sleep it started to reconnect again intermittently in either Off, On (not discoverable) and On (Discoverable). I then by chance realised my wireless keyboard was in the cupboard close by. I turned it off and reconnected it and it seems to have cured my problem. I have yet to try with keyboard on but in the past when it has been in permanent use I have never had an issue. So try resetting your bluetooth and your mice and keyboard and doing a full reconnect.

I suddenly began having this problem as well, but my problem seems to be a bit different from most of the other users (if I read the comments correctly....I was skimming!).

I have a MacBook Pro, running 10.5.4. Everything was fine until the other day when I tried to set up a login window to connect to a 802.1X network. After I did this, my computer will no longer connect to my home wireless network when I wake it from sleep. I tried the bluetooth fix and that didn't work. I have "automatically join preferred networks" selected in Network, and I removed the changes I had made related to the login window.

I know this is a relatively minor problem, but any help would be appreciated!

Interesting. I tried switching off the bluetooth in my MacBook. It did not help.
I have several bluetooth devices around and I'll try to switch off all of them. The funny thing is that my Mini Mac that has so far been working fine has started loosing the connection but recovers by itself: the received signal drops and comes back in regular intervals (tens of seconds, I think). But my Mini no longer connects automatically after waking. I have to do it manually and it asks for the password. At least it reconnects if I do it manually which MacBook does not. I also found that my MacBook will reconnect automatically after waking if I bring it very close to the rooter (within on foot). This would suggest some interference. But once connected Mac Book has excellent connection anywhere in the apartement and connection (almost) never drops. My network is isolated (neighbours all have Ch 6-7, mine is 13). But it is possible that bluetooths and cell phones are making the noise.
I tried all the tricks I could find on discussion groups with erasing different plist files etc. I think I'll now focus on Bluetooth. thanks for the suggestions.

My Mac Mini connects randomly after waking from sleep. Sometimes it asks me for the WPA password for my own network, even though it's set to connect automatically to that network only - the only network I have in the Preferred Network pane - and often asks me if I want to connect to neighbouring networks that aren't.

I never have Bluetooth switched on, so it's not that in my case. Using iStumbler I can see my network has a stronger signal than neighbouring ones, and I've switched it from Ch 1 to Ch 3, which doesn't appear to be occupied by anyone else; there are a couple of users on Ch1 and several on Ch 6 and Ch 7.

It used to work OK till I installed Leopard earlier this year, since when the connection has been playing up, despite keeping up with system updates.
