Where is a list of error codes? but have no idea what it means.

I get errors followed by some code number. Example: an unexpected error occurred -1857 [24]. So what if you don't know what it means. Also, if you are expecting an error, what is the message?

The only thing the MacErrors.h file shows for the "-1857" error is "drag was not accepted by receiver"--which probably isn't very helpful. You have a copy of the MacErrors list in your /System/Library folder, do a Command-F search on "MacErrors.h" which is buried many folders deep inside /System/Library/Frameworks. If you have Xcode installed it will open in Xcode. Otherwise you can open it with TextEdit and resave it as a plain text file in your Documents folder for handy reference.

The error codes defined in MacErrors.h hail from the Pascal toolbox days and many are unfortunately largely irrelevant. You'll still see some of them crop up from legacy code bases like the Finder or QuickTime, but for the most part you're never going to hear from the Code Fragment Manager or Open Transport again.

Error codes are chosen arbitrarily and are not guaranteed to be unique by anyone. Furthermore, they're only as meaningful as the error handling code which displayed them, and since that code was probably never meant to execute, odds are better than average that it has no idea what just happened, either.

Robert, That's strange, it is not hidden nor inside a package. Command-F finds it up just fine on my machine without any special settings. It is here:

"/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CarbonC ore.framework/ Versions/A/Headers/MacErrors.h"

As orangekay points out, it is actually remarkably unhelpful.

Francine I don't want to prolong the post but my 'Versions" has no sub folder "Headers" . I mean by versions the higher level folder of that name. There are of course in some of the deeper folders off that 'Version" other folders of that name. As you will see from my posting I am using the same OS as you.
I also tried again using the file name as you give it. You don' need bother replying.

I gave the complete path, you need to follow it exactly, although I don't understand why Spotlight won't find it. If you launch Terminal and copy and pasted this command, and hit Return, it should open in TextEdit:

open -a TextEdit /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CarbonC ore.framework/Versions/A/Headers/MacErrors.h

You can then do a Save As and put it somewhere handy.
