NO audio with .AVI with QuickTime 7.5

I'm aware that there are other posts about this issue. However, I have done several attempts and resolves to fix this problem with no luck. Here are my attempts:

*[+] Installed Perian 1.1 (no result)*
*[+] Re-installed Quicktime 7.5 (just read in some post that this is not that easy to do because QT has several components in the mac system)*
*[+] Deleted obsolete components (no result)*

I have played the videos on a PC and everything works fine. I have also attempted to copy the same videos from my Casio Elixim Digital Camera and stil no audio.

Here's the contents of my QT folders:

[+] Macintosh HD Laptop/Library/QuickTime
[-]LiveType.Component

[+] Home(or User)/Library/QuickTime
[-] AC3MovieImport.component
[-] Perian.component

I'm not sure if this is the proper configuration for this. I have Perian 1.1 installed. According to most post, this is the solution for this problem. Do I have to delete or move any of these components to the proper folders?

I'm really afraid that I have screwed something up with all of my attempts to fix this.

Here again are my problems:
[+] No audio with certain .AVI files
[+] New video imports from my digital camera has no video as well.
[+] Some .AVI videos still play videos perfectly fine.

Some please shed some light on this. Thanks you in advance! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I experienced the same problem since auto-upgrading yesterday to QT 7.5 - the sound on all my avi-files with format: generic MPEG-4 is lost and the itunes m4v-files are kind of "stuttering" when opened with QT (which I prefer to running through itunes...)

First of all: How can Apple still let a screwed up version of QT remain on the auto-update server when obviously there are already a lot of complaints in the forums?

*But more important: any ideas on how to "re-grade" to the working version of QT 7.45??**

*And most important: does anyone have a clue when to expect a fix QT 7.51 ???*

By the way, I'm running an "old" PPC - PowerBook G4 12'' and OS X 10.4.11...

Help is very much appreciated!

Do a forum search. There are 2 solutions.
At the top right of this site you will see Search Discussions.

In the blank search window w/the magnifying glass in the left corner type your issue.

You will then find several troubleshooting solutions pertaining to your issue for you to try out.

Good luck!

The complaints are miniscule compared to the millions of users not having any problems.
You should keep in mind that these are technical support forums. Generally, the only people posting here are those with problems. The thousands/millions without problems don't ever come here.

I, too, am experiencing the same problem after upgrading. After trying all the suggested fixes, to include installing the A52 codec, I still have no audio for avi files on QT. I did download the VLC player, audio and video. I used the DivX player, audio and video. However, still no audio on QT.

Also, when I use Toast to burn onto a DVD, I get no audio on the DVD.

Oh yeah, I guess that would be nice huh? ;-P

I guess I lied in my previous posts by saying I tried everything. I had not tried Perian yet.

Anyway, I downloaded the Perian 1.1 plug-in (I thought Perian was a standalone player, not a plug-in), installed it, restarted and bingo .... audio and video in QT. I tried seven or eight .avi files, and they all worked.

Here's the steps I followed to install 7.4 [mac-mini, tiger]. This did not work for me, by the way.

1) Install Pacifist.
2) Run Pacifist.
3) Open finder and search Macintosh HD for quicktime. Somewhere in the results will be .pkg files for quicktime, I believe under /Library/Receipts. Find the one for 7.4.
4) Drag .pkg to Pacifist and Click Install button once it is done loading. Follow instructions for install.
5) Restart.
6) Repair disk permissions. Restart.

After that didn't work, I removed all codecs, reinstalled 7.5 (deleted files from the system, and downloaded 7.5 from apples website and installed). Still no sound in AVIs. If I email them to my iMac with Leopard on it, they play fine, so I know they are ok.

All AVI have ms audio codec. They were created on a "toy" camcorder that belongs to my son. We are totally bummed; non of the many videos he has made have sound any more 😟

I also tried perian, no luck.

The audio problem is not limited to AVIs either. I imported vr mode file (.vro) into iMovie from my Canon DC20 camcorder. No sound either. Same for .vob files. This worked before the quicktime 7.5 upgrade. I should note I had bought and installed the QuickTimeMPEG2 module from Apple (needed for my canon dvd camcorder to work with iMovie.

I did find one work around.

Download mpeg streamclip and install.
Open disk (mini DVD-RW) with mpeg streamclip.
Export to .dv on my hard drive.
Drag exported .dv to iMovie.

I have not tried it with an AVI (yet)

On a brighter note, I have had macs for about 4 years now. First time I every had something like this happen. I am the proud owner of 4 macs. I just hope Apple is looking at this and has a fix soon.

Hi iMappy,

I recently bought an MBA and ran into my first Mac issue, where I tried running Video from my Casio, Exilim Camera that uses .avi video format; Which is a 1992 Microsoft video format. My issue was as follows, and as you mentioned, you can see the video, but you could not hear the sound, or in some instances the opposite.

I may have read most of the same Apple discussions you have read looking for a solution and have come to a workable solution... which I actually found by following your post info about "perian" and Googling it. But rather than using Perian 1.1, which is self Installed version, I DLed Perian 0.5, which I found in the apple downloads at the following address/link:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/perian.html

Other than using different Perian versions, I also noticed your file content and saw how it differs from mine. For your content you have:

By using Perian 0.5, it enables me to manually move the contents of the download, which is a simple process of drag and drop from the "Perian 0.5.dmg" file to my

[+] Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime

Perian.component (file dragged and dropped to the HD/Library/Quicktime folder)

This is clearly mentioned in the installation instructions.

I hope this helps. I apologies if this got a little long winded, but I was trying to cover as much detail as my time allows it to try to help you out and others in similar situation.

Baby Boomer, you need to relax! I have read a few too many of your posts and your level of arrogance oozes through your unprofessional replies. Not everyone is as smart as you, let me rephrase that, not everyone is as smart as you MAY THINK you are. But for your good moments, I commend you for supporting and helping ignorant Mac users as myself.

"Generally, the only people posting here are those with problems. The thousands/millions without problems don't ever come here."

Hey, wait a minute -- you're talking about my mum!

She's one of the thousands/millions who MIGHT have a problem but don't know where to look for the answer.
Or don't know how to.
Or are scared to change anything manually in case they break their new Mac.
Or don't know they need to, and just think that their new Mac is a pain in the proverbial because it won't do what they think is the simplest thing - play videos with sound, right off their $199 digital camera.

Perhaps Apple could continue to champion the user and either include ALL THE CODECS with each QT update, or include NONE and create a simple, simple search and install app/utility that crawls the file info (the same info found in the QT>WINDOW>MOVIE INFO panel) and drops the appropriate codec in an update?

Anyway - I've spent AN HOUR trying to fix this on my wife's brand-new, straight outta the box MacBook, downloading all kinds of strange-looking packages from websites all over the show. (Her old iBook G3 played the files juuuust fine.) Googling the (hard to find and "decode" in the Movie Info box) codec just sent me to crazy, scary, spammy looking pages.

And finally I found this page, and downloaded Perian, from the Apple website so it felt safe, and did the drag-and-drop thing that felt so Mac.

AND IT WORKS! THANKS PERIAN!

Other users with Casio cameras might like to try the same thing.

All,

Perian 1.1 for the win.
downloadable from here: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22923/perian
solved the issue straight away for me.

Many thanks to all the nice folks here for posting replies and solutions.
As a Mac newbie its always daunting to address a technical issue. I've 'fixed' PC's for 25 years so it's always scary to have a 'new' thing to look at.
