Where is snapshot of screen being saved?

Where is snapshot of screen being saved?

When I used to take a snapshot of my screen it would save the image to my desktop. However I tried it today and I hear the camera sound but the image isn't on my desktop. Anybody know where I should look and how to reset it back to saving to my desktop?

~/Pictures I believe. TinkerTool will let you change this.

I have already looked there as well as most other obvious places. I have basically checked my entire home directory. If the screen snapshot file was saved but not renamed what is the default name that the file is given? This might help me locate it with spotlight.

Picture X.pdf where X is a sequentially chosen number.

Did you hold down the Control key? If so, it's on the clipboard. Open Preview and go to File -> New from Pasteboard…

I did hold down the control key. I was able to paste the last one to the clipboard in Preview. Are they just being cached until pasted by holding down the control key. If so, then I likely wasn't saving them anywhere at all even though the pic was taken.
This seems different then I remember doing it but it has been a while since I have taken a screen snapshot.

Basic screenshot has been command + shift + 3 for well over a decade. The clipboard feature is more recent.

When you copy something, it goes to the clipboard. When you paste something, it comes from the clipboard.
Holding down control just makes it a little easier to paste the picture into a document.
