G5 2.5 sleep / racing fan?

Hi all,

I have a problem with my Mac G5 2.5 Quad. I have recently installed Leopard 10.5.3 successfully.

Whenever I try and sleep that mac, the monitors go to sleep and then the Mac goes quiet and after about 30 seconds or so the fans come on really loud. The only way to stop it is to hold the power key to turn it off?

I've tinkered but to no avail. Even to the point of a complete 'erase and install' of Leopard 10.5.3. But the problem persists? The only software that has since been re-installed on the Mac is Adobe CS3, Microsoft Office, SuperDuper, Filemaker and Appzapper. There were no problems with any of theses apps before Leopard.

I used the original Install disc to do a hardware check and it all came up fine.

Does anyone know how I can solve this annoying problem?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance.

YZ

That's unusual. Have you tried reseting the System Management Unit on the computer?
If you haven't all you need to do is unplug the power cord from the computer for 2 min. This could possibly fix it
Also might want to try putting the computer to sleep in safe boot to see if the issue is occurring there. Which is restarting the computer holding down the shift key.
When you did the erase and install did you run all software updates and then test it prior to installing all other party programs?

I have exactly the same problem as described in this posting. I did a reset of the SMU (for my machine press a button on the system board in side my Mac) also deleted the PRAM and VRAM parameters. Both toppics are described in Apple support articles. I have also installed my Power Mac from scratch again. So I deleted everything, used the standard install DVD and have not installed any other program after also no updates. It is still there also after installing the updates. As soon as you leave the Power Mac G5 2.5 Ghz Dual Core on and it enters in a sleep mode the machine stops reacting to any key strike what so ever on the Keyboard and the Fan is making a **** of a noise. The only option I have also found is to disable the computer sleep mode. Does not sound right to me. Any ideas.

I'm using G5 PowerMac 1.8 running 10.5.4 (1.5 Gb RAM) and I too suffer the jet-engine fan roar. Nothing seems to help. I'm contacting support and I'll post any helpful (or non-helpful) info. The only reason I went to Leopard was to use Airport Express (which is more functional as a paper weight). Lost my previous "iLife" programs as a result of upgrading to "improved" OS. If Apple wants to sell Leopard to G5 users, it should come with a warning label: "This OS may screw up your system. AND you'll have to fork over $80 more if you want everything we've included for free in previous systems." I was happy as poodle with 10.3.9. Not at all pleased.

same thing. only have had this tower for less than a month. bought it used and it works fine and i was prepared for the fan noise while working. installed a fresh copy of leopard onto a brand new hdd and no complaints. but after many times of having this sleep without any fan problems, this guy just turned the fans up as loud as possible in sleep mode. nothing woke it, did a hard restart and found this post and am going to attempt to sleep the tower so i can sleep. if anyone finds out something please let me know.

I just started having this same problem: fans blazing and not able to wake from sleep. I just recently had the logic board replaced from ethernet port problems, and everything was working fine for about a week. I have narrowed down my problem to my Leopard upgrade (10.5.4) from Tiger 10.4.x (the last version).

Of note, when I did put the computer to sleep, I would hear a quick rise in the fans, then a complete drop in all noise after a brief click. Everything was silent. Now, I hear a quick rise in the fans, which remains constant. After about 30-45sec, a plane begins to take off and the extreme noise continues. After restarting the CMU, I was able to wake it up after this noise begins, but before I could not wake it at all.

I'm on the phone with Apple Care now and will make known any resolutions to this.

Has anyone found the root cause of this problem? Or can anyone suggest a novel solution? Resetting the SMU/PRAM/NVRAM, re-installing the OS and replacing the RAM do not help in my case. The behavior I see on my Quad Core Power Mac is that a few moments after the computer goes to sleep, the fans kick in full speed and the computer is incapable of waking. I have no choice but to hold down the power button until the Mac powers off. Initially, I was running 10.4.11. I did a fresh install of 10.5.5 and I get the same behavior. Thoughts?

I have a similar issue with my Power Mac G5 dual 2.0, however I didn't get my first instance until after I replaced the original Apple 160 GB hard drive with a new 400 GB Western Digital SATA2 Caviar Drive. I just dropped in the drive with no jumpers to see if I ran into any of the issues that other users had run into and reported on. I suspect there may be a relationship. I just bought this system used 2 weeks ago, and the original owner said the original drive was basically new because he replaced it with a different drive when he first bought the machine. It is running Leopard with all the updates.

I used the disk utility to restore the contents of the original drive to the new drive. Ran drive verify then permissions repair (there were some issues but it repaired them). Seemed to run well until this incident.

So, I have two variables. I will likely attempt some jumper settings first (power management and SATA2 to SATA1). Easiest thing to change.

If that fails, I will revert back to the old drive and see if it runs fine.
