Where are my synths when using External Instrument?

I have a problem when using the External Instrument plug-in on an instrument track.
None of my synths are showing up as MIDI destinations. My two options are MIDI Graphics and GM Instrument. The GM instrument drops down to a standard list of GM instruments that don't have anything to do with my setup.
My synths DO show up when I add a MIDI track (I'm able to select them via the "Port" drop down menu.
I'm using a MOTU MIDI Express XT. All the synths show up with Audio MIDI set up, and test OK.
I'm baffled. Please help!

Because you haven't created environment objects to represent them.

In the environment, create a New -> Instrument. Call it "DX7" or whatever, and set the MIDI port and channel it listens to.

Now when you assign that object to a sequencer track, or the external instrument object, the MIDI flows to the appropriate port & channel, and you always just reference your instruments by name.

If they are multi-timbral instruments, then use a "Multi-instrument" object instead of a regular Instrument object.
