Limited to a 100 songs regardless of media?

So,

It seems that there's conflicting information about because Cingular site says that you're only limited by memory card size and compression where as Cnet is reporting

"The Rokr will be available this weekend in Cingular stores and sooner online at $249.99 with a two-year service agreement. It can hold only 100 songs, even if the consumer inserts a memory card larger than the 512MB card that ships with the phone."

Cingular website under "More information" states.

"3 The amount of music your ROKR E1 can hold depends on the compression rate of your songs and the amount of media stored on your phone."

Cingular states up to 100 songs - which means from the Apple site

How much flash storage will I need to store songs on my phone?
To store 25 average-length songs on your phone, you will need 128MB of available flash storage space. To store 50 average-length songs on your phone, you will need 256MB of available flash storage space. To store 100 average-length songs on your phone, you will need 512MB of available flash storage space.

Yes, I did get one from my local Best Buy (they sell Cingular there). I can confirm now that is limited to 100 songs, I have over a 100 meg left on the card, but it gives me an error saying that it's limited to 100 songs. You can use the rest of the card space to store data.

It does seem to require 128 bit also. My entire library is 192bit and wouldn't copy until I selected "convert to 128 bit" in the phone options. It's not a big deal though, it just converts the songs on the phone, you don't have to convert your library, nor does it convert the songs IN your library. It does it in the background as you drag and drop them. The songs on the phone are 128 bit, but the same songs in my library remain 192 bit. Hope this helps.

Now I haven't done this yet - but it seems to me that if the "number" of songs as opposed to the total size of the files (512 MB in this case) is the limiting factor, then the way to get more songs on the ROKR is to use a program that allows you to splice two or more songs together and rename the file as something that will let you know which songs are in that file. I'm sure there is software that will let you do this. Audio Hijack? or some other. I assume this would work provided you don't go over the 512 MB limit. Just a thought...
