Folder Action applied to sub folders- how to do it

I have created an automator script load a folder to a folder on my .Mac account. I want to have it run automatically when there is any change to the folder or one of the sub folders inside of it. I set the folder action on the main folder and it worked great. I then added some sub-folders and the first time I added them, it worked fine, but when I changed some things in the sub-folder the folder action didn't trigger. I know I can trigger it manually, but don't really want to. I could also write new scripts for each subfolder, but the subfolders are constantly changing so that would be a pain. Is there a way to have the main folder action trigger even when items in sub folders are changed. Thanks for any help.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

thanks, that's unfortunate, it seemed very convenient however sometimes the changes are in subfolders and even new sub folders are added or changed (sometimes 3 deep). Others have suggested I write a script to attach the item to all subfolders and new ones as they appear, but I think it will be easier to just manually run the workflow when I need it from the applescipt icon in the menu bar
