ATV unable to "Access iTunes Store"

Hello all. I apologize up front for the blatant ATV newbie question, but I am at a loss here and I've spent days unsuccessfully trying to find an answer on this and other forums.

Here's my scenario. I've had an ATV for about 2 months. My ATV is connected to my newly installed PC and DSL internet connection via hard wire ethernet connection through a new Linksys Wireless N router/switch using one of the 4 ethernet switch ports. I've got one ethernet cable running from my office to my home entertainment system, and then that connection is split using a second switch on that end so that I can connect my DirecTV DVR and the ATV both to the Internet. I just installed my new PC (running Vista) a few days ago, but this problem was occurring before with my old PC. My ATV is recognized by iTunes (correctly shows up as a device in iTunes) and my photos have been synced from my PC to my ATV. I can also see all of the new movie selections and trailers on my ATV, so I know that it is successfully accessing the Internet (without an Internet connection, nothing appears in the Movies section). I have also downloaded and installed the Take 2 software update and the newest iTunes version as well.

My problem is that when I click on the "Buy" button to purchase or rent a movie on my ATV, the screen goes to "Accessing the iTunes Store" with the progress circle spinning below. The problem is that it stays on that screen and never starts downloading the movie. I originally thought that there may be a temporary problem with the iTunes store, but I can go to my PC and immediately access the iTunes store there. I also thought that my Linksys router/switch might be blocking the access with a firewall, but I have verified that the router's firewall has been disabled. What's even more maddening is that I tried to download a purchased movie this weekend and ran into this problem. After trying to buy the movie last Saturday, I just gave up and never successfully downloaded the movie. Then, on Wednesday, I received an email receipt from Apple where my account had been charged for the purchase price of the movie! So there is at least some communication with the iTunes store, because I was billed for the movie even though it never downloaded. I did capture the movie in iTunes by "Checking for Purchases" under the Store menu, but it had not downloaded to iTunes or to ATV before then.

What am I missing here? Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

I am having the exact same problem. I've spent the last week trying to figure it out. I've ran several tests/configurations and have eliminated the following - firewall, router, dsl modem, ISP, itunes account, everything hardware and software. The only thing I've concluded is that Apple is somehow blocking access by MAC address (if this is possible). The reason I think this is that I can log into the iTunes store and purchase from my home PC but can't do it from my home iMac or home Apple TV. It started for me somewhere around June 7th. I have been able to purchase just fine for at least the last 3 months on both the home iMac and home Apple TV. And I know it's not based on port blocking because like I said I can do everything just fine on my home PC on the same network. It absolutely has to be MAC address. The red flag for me was that both my Apple TV and iMac stopped working around the same time. I wish I had another iMac on the network to try but I know it would probably work. I've read of people having it work on one but not the other on the same network. I truly don't know what is going on but I'm 100% sure that Apple does know of the problem. Or maybe it isn't a problem maybe they are randomly shutting people out because of server problems/bandwidth problems...who freaking knows. I'm guessing it has to do with all the changes they are making recently (with me.com, mobileme.com, 3G iphone, new software updates) Obviously something has gone wrong temporarily and they are not coming forward with the reason. It just ticks me off that I read everyone trying to fix hardware, software, etc... and we are all just wasting time. They know what's wrong and they aren't saying. Don't worry it will just start randomly working one day. In the mean time we are screwed. Please keep this thread going....

I had the same problem...ATV would not access the iTunes Music Store, but my iMac 20" running Leopard would. The ATV was linked to this iMac's iTunes.

Open the iTunes to which the ATV is linked. In the menu, go to STORE > Deauthorize Computer. You will need to use your iTunes store password to do so. Then, re-authorize this same computer by going to STORE > Authorize Computer.

You may see your Apple TV begin to receive a small number of un-synchronized files, likely purchased music / movie files it had initially "dissed" when it could properly access the iTunes Music Store. Now that you have done the "deauth / reauth" procedure above, that should do it!

Let me know how you did!

Ok, I'm going to publicly apologize to Apple now. I originally ruled out the router because it would access the iTunes store on my PC on the home network just fine but not my home iMac or home Apple TV. I hauled my iMac and Apple TV over to a friends house to try it using his internet connection and it worked. So this obviously pointed me to the router. You'll never get me to understand why Windows PCs would work and not Apple products but I'll I had to do was upgrade my router's firmware to the latest version and it fixed my problem. I can now get to the iTunes store on all 3 (Windows PC, iMac and Apple TV). For those interested I'm using a Qwest Actiontec GT701. Once I upgraded to the 6.0 firmware from the 5.5 it fixed my problem.

I think that my problem MAY have been a router or modem problem also. After trying all the suggestions (auth/deauth, etc), I finally shut down my firewall to see if that was the problem. No change there, so I brought it back up. I then unplugged my router and DSL modem to power them down, and then after a few minutes plugged them back up. I also did the same thing for my switch and Apple TV, both located with my home entertainment system. After unplugging and replugging those 4 devices, my Apple TV automatically checked for downloads and began downloading a movie that I had tried to rent a few days ago. This was at least an improvement, because the Apple TV was not accessing iTunes at all immediately before then. I left it downloading overnight (haven't checked it this morning yet), but it was actively downloading when I left it last night.

I'll update this thread if anything else arises. Thanks to everyone for the input!
