What does "Skip Count" mean in iTunes

I was just playing around with my iTunes view (use it with my 5G 30GB iPod) and noticed that there was a column I could display called, "Skip Count." Some of my songs had counts as high as 3, but most had nothing. I have searched the help (both iPod and iTunes) and the support boards, but haven't found anything. So:

1. What is it?
2. How does it get incremented?

As far as I can tell, it only marks a song as "skipped" if you are between 2 and 20 seconds into the song. 0 to 1 seconds or anything over 20 seconds does nothing.

It's an iTunes only feature.

And yes, I know that I can experiment myself, but that would screw up my current playlists.

You don't mind if I screw up mine then? 😉

It's the number of times a song is skipped in iTunes. If when a song comes on iTunes you skip to the next song, it shows as "1 skip count".

If you've got a lot of songs you don’t listen to so much, this will help you sort through music that you routinely skip over.

Jeff, do you know when skip count is incremented? for instance playcount increments at end of play. How much time into playing a track is allowed for it to count as a skip?

Not really any idea, it's something I've never really bothered with.

I would imaging that if you play a few seconds of the track then move on, it would count as a skip. On the other hand, you might have to skip it altogether for it to count.

Does that also count for skipping songs on my iPod? I have only rarely played anything from iTunes directly - it is really just a means for me to manage my iPod. So, were these skips from my iPod, or from early on when I was playing with iTunes?

And yes, I know that I can experiment myself, but that would screw up my current playlists.

I might try using skip count if 0-2 seconds play doesn't count.

I sometimes just don't want to listen to a particular track but may later on. Make a smart playlist sorted by skip count then maybe edit ratings down for tracks skipped a lot.
