Open iTunes when this iPod is connected - no workee

I have selected "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected" for both my iPod classic and iPhone. However, iTunes does not launch and sync unless I launch the application. Shouldn't the iPod/iPhone being connected to the computer cause the application to launch? Otherwise what is the point of checking the box?

the iphone helper ap is the key. To locate it you have to open the application package - ctl click - show package contents >> Resources >> (now make alias of the helper ap and drag it to your desktop). Go to System Prefs >> Accounts >> Login Items >> and add the alias to the login items. once there you can delete it from your desktop..
