1st Gen Ipod Nano, Battery Life Problems

Ive had my 1st gen Ipod Nano for a few years now, and just recently ive had to replace the battery as i was only getting through one song before the battery went flat. After the battery was replaced it improved but now i only get around 1.5 hours of playing time before it goes flat. Sometimes when charging the battery gets flatter? So i decided to replace the battery a second time myself, but i can still only get around 1-2 hours of playtime?
ANY help would be appreciated...is it a software problem or just cheap replacement batteries (bought of ebay)
