Using MyBook World Edition

So I have been using the Western Digital MyBook Word Edition NAS for two days now, got her up and running fine, but I never bothered to think...Should I reformat this drive under a different format? i dunno what format it's in, but chances are, it is not the MacOs format.

So far all is good, i just wanna get rid of some PUBLIC folders which i can't seem to eliminate and the serial number folder in it either. Some people suggest a RAID reformat, but wanted some insights. I mainly want it as a secondary hard drive, which i will use wirelessly to view my music and movies using MediaCentral and my DVI connection.

Cheers,

Paul

I don't believe that the Mybook World NAS devices can be configured in a Mac format (or any other specific format, for that matter). It runs Linux, and the drives are formatted for Linux. Then, the server software shares files either via SMB (the Windows sharing protocol).

I could be wrong, but that's exactly how I'm using mine (which I was using with Windows systems before adding a few Macs to my network). If the application you want to use can mount SMB shares, then you're all set. If not, then you won't be able to use the NAS device with those applications.

OK, mine runs really well, I just want to get rid of the Folder that is there by Default, the PUBLIC folder, since i am not fond of the name Public, unless i can rename it, i cant seem to remove it. Also the other folder with the ID i know it's the ID for the Mionet, which i don't use for obvious reasons. If i could remove those two, then I'm happy.

If you access the Mybook's configuration utility (just go to the device's IP address in your browser), you might be able to delete "Public." I can't remember my password, and so can't get into my own configuration (and I'm too lazy at the moment to hard reset it). I left mine just in case--doesn't hurt anything, and I created new folders with user-level permissions to control things.
