I got the recent update a couple days ago and I have not been able to get Safari to load since the update (quicktime 7.5 itunes 7.6.2 etc...) When I click on Safari in the dock it bounces once and does nothing. I have 10.5.3 and Safari 3.1.1. I've read what I think are the relevant threads but still am having problems--is there a way to fix this problem? I do have Microsoft Office and I do recall there being a recent update to that, could that be causing any problems?
I have the same problem. I did repair all disk permissions 10 days ago. The computer was off for a week, and I ran the Quicktime update when I powered back up. Safari hasn't worked since. Safari tries to open then I get the "application Safari quit unexpectedly" window. Reopening Safari doesn't work either. I repaired all disk permissions since I discovered the problem, and also ran Disk Warrior. Still no luck.
I haven't updated any Microsoft applications recently, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Hi there! I'm having the same problem with Safari - I downloaded software updates yesterday and haven't been able to open Safari since. If I click on the icon, it bounces once but no window opens. I've tried opening it all different ways, but nothing. Any input would be much appreciated!
I have the same problem! I think I might messed up. I updadated safari yesterday but maybe it was a wrong version? I have MacOS 10.3.9 and downloaded the latest safari verson, probably not compatible.
Now neither safari nor imail start, just bouce once or twice and do nothing too. I ran tech tool. It did nothing different. I also reapired permissions. Same.
Please let me know what to do next.
Isn't it much of a coincidence 3 of us are having problems after the update? I also see we all have different Mac os versions, so it's probably not it. I called apple support, but apparently my extended applecare expired this week ( i never imagined I would still have my mac running properly till now! I'm in love with it!), so they denied my the help... I hope you can get to the bottom of this issue. Is it posible to uninstall the update? or is there a function to go back to the moment before the update? Thanks for your help.

What I think is you should look in Console (in Applications/Utilities) and see if there is a crash report or other error message being logged there when Safari tries (but fails) to start for you.
If you can find a crash report or message(s), post them in here because someone will probably notice something you can do to get further...
See if you can open it through - Finder>Applications>Safari. If that doesn't
work, then perhaps the way forward would be, to Reinstall Safari. If you boot
from your Installer Disk, and select Custom Install. You'll see a list of items,
one of which is Safari. Bypass Languages, Printers etc; to save on time.
Be sure to First Repair Permissions. When the Install completes, Repair Permissions
again, and Reboot.
I've never posted a crash report before, and it's rather long. This may be a stupid question, but is there a specific part of it that needs to be posted, or that I should leave out?
What I would do in your case, is to bring your OS X up to date. You can do this
with the Combo Update, bringing you to 10.4.11. This should solve your issues.
PS. I'm not sure if you if thats possible from 10.3 I'll find out, and post back.
I'd suggest posting all of it. With other issues that have been resolved by the community in here both the thread crash information and the (large) list of libraries loaded into memory have been helpful/necessary to work out what has gone wrong and what should be deleted/removed/re-installed to make it well again.
NB: Depending on which log in Console you found the crash report in, there might actually be more than one crash in the same log. Just copy/paste out the one latest one. It'll be several hundred lines probably, but the forum software here loves it 😉
I had the same thing happen to me. Look in your log file and you will see that you are missing the "main menu nib " file. I have yet to figure out how to get that back. Repair permissions and tech tool do no good. I have tried to install older versions of safari but I keep getting messages that my OS is not new enough, wich it is. I would love to find out how to take care of this.
Same thing has happened to me. I can't get safari to open. It just beachballs when trying to run safari. I completely deleted the application from my macbook. Removed the preference files in the user library. Removed the application support files in the library. I tried to reinstall but it says my OS X is not new enough even though it is 10.5.4 or whatever the latest release is. I tried installing Safari for Tiger but again it tells me that it isn't the right version to do the install.
I wish Apple would quit making Safari so finicky about how you install it. They need to put a force option on the menu to force a new install even if it thinks it isn't the right version.
My next step is to try and install Safari 4 developer preview. I am going to put the 3.1.1 back on the machine as well as the plist and application support files as Safari 4 checks to see if 3.1.1 is installed. If this works I will let you know.
