Second-hand iPhone - will it work with my SIM card?

Hey guys,

My friend is thinking of upgrading to the new 3G iPhone when it comes out and I'm thinking of buying his 1st generation handset from him.

It is a 100% legit iPhone and has not been unlocked or fiddled with in any way.

My question is whether it will work with my O2 SIM or are the handsets locked to the SIM that they are activated with?

MacBook 13", Mac OS X (10.4.9), 2Ghz / 80GB / 1GB RAM / SuperDrive

Speak to O2.

There should not be a problem. However, this could depend on your tariff/plan with O2 and the length of period you have left on your contract. This could mean you can't use the old iPhone until your contract renewal time.

You may need to get a new iPhone SIM from O2. Give them a ring and see.

I can't trust anything that any O2 representatives say to me - call centre staff are below scum 😀

I've decided to just stick with my Sony Ericsson W810i until the iPhone comes down in price - the monthly fees are just far too high...

I caved in a few weeks later and got the iPhone 3G...

...I'm such a sucker for the Apple brand! 😀
