Can't mount a disk image: "No Child Processes found" ?

I tried installing something I downloaded, and instead of mounting the disk image, It returned an error saying, " No Child Processes found". I thought it was a corrupt file and tried to just double click and mount something I had lying around in my downloads file, but even with an older file that I had already mounted and installed it returned the same error.

I tried repairing permissions using disk utility on the drive and the volume to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried restarting your machine? I wonder if maybe you've reached a file descriptor limit either on a process or on the system. If the problem happens immediately after you restart, then that's not it.

Another thought would be a space issue. Is your harddisk close to being full (or, at least the partition that your system image is on)? It could be that the system can't write some temporary files it needs to do the unpacking and whatnot.

Last thing, have you checked your system.log? You can use the Console app in your Applications->Utilities folder. Launch that application, take a look at system.log, then try to open a dmg. You may see some errors show up in that log...

thanks for the reply.

I tried your initial suggestions with no success.

I did try the console viewer and it returned an error in the log filed under /library/logs/crashreporter/diskimages-helper..etc..

Do you think this could be fixed by just re-installing the 10.5.3 update or combo update?

Sorry, but failed to mention that I have a good 35+ gigs of HD space still on the computer. I'm still running only 512mb of ram, but I've never had any issues with the computer mounting images from any downloads. Thanks again.

The amount of RAM you have shouldn't make any difference to this problem.

Your disk image subsystem is trying to access memory in the kernel that it isn't allowed to access, which generates the SIGBUS error you see in that crash report. This kills your disk image helper, which manifests itself to you as a failure to open the dmg.

The first thing you should do (if you haven't already) is send that crash report to Apple. Then, as you suggested, I think reinstalling the 10.5.3 combo update would probably be a good next step.

Reading the first part of the crash report it's fairly easy to get a high level view of what's going wrong (i.e. you know what happened in the kernel, and you can see which process the kernel sent a fatal signal to). Sometimes this is enough to correlate, for example, with a software update or new application install that might have lead to the problem. Often times it's not though.

Reading the rest of the crash report, with the execution stack, is much more difficult and best left to a kernel/filesystem developer (or someone familiar enough with whatever code is implicated).

Okay, I'll try this. Will have to bring my laptop to work to do it. I was thinking I'd just throw the package onto a Cd on the computer at work then use that to transfer it to my home laptop, if the package isn't too big. Thanks a bunch.

That works. Burn the DMG to a CD in Disk Utility.

Put the .dmg on disks at work. Took the disks home to my laptop. When I tried to install the update and anther file on another disk, it quits immediately. I'm at a loss. There must be someway to install this update.

Does it quit with the same error? Or is there something new in the log?

it just quit with one of those " the program quit unexpectedly etc.." messages. It does this for any .pkg file I try to install. I verified the volume on the hd and detected invalid volumes so I booted in safe mode and repaired the disk which seems to have been successful and repaired permissions in the disk utility after that, however after a restart I am still unable to mount an image much less install a .pkg off a burnt disk. I'll try to do a target install at work if I can get my hands on a fire wire cable, but other than that I don't know what to do. I don't want to have to reformat if i don't have to.
