formatting ipod issues

My iPod has not been working for a large period and have recently decided to try and fix the problem. When I plug the iPod into my computer the device shows up in windows and in iTunes but a message appears saying that the iPod may need to be restored or disconnected and reconnected as it is corrupt. I tried to restore the iPod which a message appeared saying that the iPod could not be restored. I disconnected and reconnected the iPod and then the iPod would not show in iTunes. I tried to format the iPod using Windows which another message appeared saying that Windows was unable to format the iPod.

I don't know where I am going wrong and it is driving me insane, to the point where I'm considering binning the iPod.

If anyone knows a solution please let me know ASAP as I wanted to use my iPod when I go on holiday in August 08.

Thanks

See if you can force the iPod into disk mode:
Ensure the HOLD switch is OFF so that there is NO orange color showing beneath the switch. Then, press and hold the MENU and the SELECT (center) buttons together for about 10 seconds, until you see an Apple logo. When you see the Apple, IMMEDIATELY press and hold the SELECT (center) and the PLAY/PAUSE buttons together until you see a check mark, and the iPod says "Disk Mode, OK to Disconnect."

Then try restoring again

Sometimes after a failed restore, the iPod will show up in Disk Management as being unreadable, rather than specifying FAT or FAT32. I wanted to make sure this wasn't happening in your case. But, since the iPod is at least recognized in disk management, I'd suggest attempting to format it there. After this is done, try to restore the iPod in iTunes again.

Put the iPod into disk mode first, as indicated above.

Open My Computer and you should see the iPod listed there. Make sure the drive letter on it is the one that you had changed it to earlier (to ensure you're working with the iPod). Right-click on the iPod and click Format. Ensure "QuickFormat" is not checked. Leave the remainder of the settings on their default, and then click Format.

It is normal for this to take some time, and for the iPod to run warmer than usual while completing the format.
