Simple sound card question (hopefully)

Hi - right now I have my Mac hooked up to my Onkyo stereo receiver with all the requisite cinema processors....I just have the basic no frills sound card the Mac came with. However I will be mixing sound using Soundtrack Pro soon - does my Onkyo already do all the work I need to hear in surround sound or do I actually need to upgrade my sound card? If so, any suggestions?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.3), 3.00 GHz Quad Xeon, 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon X1900 XT, 4x500GB WD Caviar HDD

Hi, basically you need a 6 channel sound card and a 6 channel receiver.

A stereo receiver with surround decoders will only give you surround from an surround encoded source (Dolby or DTS), and I don't know of any realtime plug-ins available for STP, although you could check out Neyrinck.com for after the fact encoders.

You will find plenty of post here about which multichannel interfaces might be appropriate.

Thanks so much for your help - I think I've settled on M-Audio's Revolution 7.1.

Update - oh F#$%. Scratch that - I need a PCI-Express card. Thought I had a relatively cheap answer.

Just make sure it's a PCI-e card so that it's compatible with your computer model.
