Disable "Search For" Sidebar menu in Finder

Hi

Like the title says. Is there any possible way to disable the "Search for" Section in the sidebar of Finder? I don't use it and it is really annoying me (i have disabled all the elements in it but the header didn't disappear as suspected.

macjack, on this topic I recall a post by Terence Devlin concerning photos in iPhoto,
the post is here, where he shows an image of a Finder window with "media" in the sidebar.

I just could not figure out how he got that there.
Do you have this in your version of Leopard?

If this can be added, then that would open up the possibility of rearranging the headings in the sidebar.

I really don't know. "Media" looks familiar, but I don't have it. Perhaps in an earlier version of 10.5 or carried over from 10.4 migration? Page 14 of the Leopard Manual shows the default sidebar.

I'm almost positive you cannot remove "Search For" but every time I say something like that I'm proven wrong 😉

btw roam - what happened, did you lose your original identity here?

Gayver,

I was able to hack this to some extent.

User uploaded file

The file;
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localiz ableCore.strings

has an entry
"SD7" = "SEARCH FOR";
and changed it to
"SD7" = "";

killall Finder

Which still leaves it there, just that the string has no content. The grey triangle is still there and opens of course, but it is a work around of sorts.

I was unable to add a new entry heading, so that is still to be explored.

macjack,
Yes, my old identity was vaporised last Christmas, +disabled for security reasons+, though I never learned why or what caused it. So I had a break from AD, got on with other things, but now have a new Mac and new questions.

regards roam

Kudos on that hack and congrats on the new iMac! Tough break with AD. If it happened to me, I'd be tempted to take an ID no one ever heard of and have some fun 😉

I don't have an answer to the initial question, but want to clarify a detail.

roam2, you overlooked that in [his post|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7387162#7387162] Terence refers to
any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue

If you have Safari open at this moment then just try File > Open File and a window will show up where you can see the entry Media.

PS: OK, I should have scrolled to the end of this thread before posting. ivan54 already made the observation I mention above. Shame on me 😉
