From what I have seen so far, there seem to be only a few films that actually have any rating displayed on the ATV. I have only seen a few films with the PG rating displayed at the top right of the screen. However, not all the PG films have their rating displayed, and any other films rated 12, 15, 18 don't have any rating displayed at all.
How am I supposed to know if a film is suitable to watch with my 5 year old daughter present?
I think that some movies are the "unrated" versions that the studios give Apple (remember, Apple has no control over what is given to them from studio).
An "unrated" movie doesn't mean it is bad or dirty or anything. Just means it differs from the one show in theaters (extra scene, or something) and thus not the version that got "rated" by the MPAA. Thus there is no rating to show you.
Now if you really are unsure guess you will have to rely on the computer. Pull up movie at IMDB.com They list rating and also not only that, for most movies you can pull up details about the rating (will list each use of a bad word, at least a count of them) any scenes that could be questionable, etc. Many get very detailed about what is going on so you can make a very informed descision and not be surprised.
But here in the UK it seems that something like 80% of the films haven't got ratings displayed. 80% of the films can't be 'unrated'. And why should I have to check on the net to see what the films rating is, if it should already be on the device that's supplying the film?
Apple needs to sort this out.
So is a film version the same in each country or do they have to get by the local film censorship panels that will vary in strictness from place to place? Bizarre loophole if you could rent an unrated film that had deliberately been cut for DVD rental/cinema shows at a particular level rating in the same country.
Agree about IMDB or use Amazon for older films and see what the DVD rating is.
A modicum of common sense is also needed from the film's write up and nature - a Disney film will usually be suitable, but something by Stephen King probably wouldn't.
Having said that the feature described as "a group of fun loving young adults and their dog, staying on a remote farm in a camper van at night, are haunted and terrorised by mysterious supernatural apparitions" might conjure up thoughts of crude adolescent behaviour on a camping trip and dabbling with the occult, equally it could be an episode of Scooby Doo 😉
One thing I have noticed since my initial post is that ALL the films available on iTunes in the UK do indeed display their ratings within iTunes. So, if their ratings are in iTunes, there is simply no excuse for not displaying them on the ATV.
This is a really good point, and I noticed it today when looking on AppleTV, then came to discussions to see what was up (if anyone else had noticed)... And the problem is not a small one — so many have no posted rating, I got tired of looking... The content must have a posted rating. If it is unrated by the MPAA, that must be posted as UNRATED.
I would prefer that iTunes have a Rating field I can set when I add my ripped DVDs to the iTunes library (unprotected format). Of course, the movies in protected formats couldn't be changed.
In this way, I can add the tv screening features on these movies, too.
