Can't burn DVDs - an unexpected error occured, Error code 0x80020000

So, last time I burned files onto a DVD, it was fine, but today, no matter what I do, I get the same error. An unexpected error occured, error code 0x80020000. This is after the DVD spins up to speed and I have confirmed burn speed.

So I restarted, I tried a different brand of DVD, and I tried burning at 1x. None of it made any difference. What should I try next, oh knowledgeable Mac people?

Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Hi lemur,

You didn't indicate which Mac you have and details and that really helps us to trouble shoot for you.
Go to the Apple logo top right in your Desktop and click, "About This Mac" ... three main things to tell us: Mac OS X Version Processor and Memory.

One thing to check when burning a DVD is how much free drive space you have. Open Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. Now look below where it says:
Capacity and Available. If you have 15% free drive space, that's your culprit.

Also, Maxell and Fuji seem to work for most Macs if that helps any.

Check your hard drive to see if it reports any errors: Using your system restore disk(s) run Disk Utility and check the drive for errors. If DU reports errors, click Repair. (Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)

Sorry, it's Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Memory.

The reason I am burning files onto DVD is because I need to free up memory. It doesn't give a percentage, but it's under 15% free. However, I have filled up the hard drive until it gave me the "your hard drive is almost full" message and never had this problem before.

Hi lemur,

I think you are confused between hard drive space and memory. You have more than sufficient memory to burn DVD's, but if you get a message advising you have insufficient drive space that entirely different. Under 15% is bad... you need that much just to boot a Mac. What you need to do is move data to an external drive, a hard disk enabled iPod, and iDisk if you have a .mac account... in essence, you need to free up drive space. An easy way to keep track of this all the time is to be able to view this information right under your MacintoshHD icon. Click a clear space on your Desktop so you see Finder in the menu at the top. Then click, View/Show View Options. A window will open. Make sure the box is checked that says: Show Item Info. That will display the total drive capacity and free drive space right under the MacintoshHD icon all the time. Much easier to keep track of this way.

Ok.. make sure also when you transfer files from the drive to actually DELETE the originals or all you are doing is copying files from one place to another and not freeing up drive space. Send them to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.

I hope this helps... just post back if you need more assistance.

By the way, audio/video and images are usually the culprit for taking up the most space. So that's a good place to start and back up those files.

Wait, seriously?

Yes. And while your at it, ponder how a Keyboard update could possibly be 35.3 MB!

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/keyboardsoftwareupdate12.html

That is enough space to run SheepShaver, OS7.5.5, OS8.6, OS9.04, and several Applications!

Good find on that error though, looks like you have a way out now!

It'd be nice if error codes included some bit of text methinks.

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. Very important to watch free drive space. If you try to burn a DVD and there isn't enough space to do so, it just won't work. You will continue to get that dialog box with that error number.

Go here for the Mac Maintenance Quick Assist: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1147
* Read the 4th paragraph... freeing up drive space.

** If you have an iPod, check to see if it has the, "hard disk enabled" feature. You can move files to it!
