Let's try to get one set of possibilities off the table. The following procedures have to be done while you're logged into your user account on the PC, because compatibility tab settings are specific to each different user account.
Head into the Compatibility tab of the Properties for your iTunes.exe as per the following document:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
... however, when you're in there, make sure that none of the boxes are checked (not just the compatibility mode box).
If iTunes still isn't launching, head into the Compatibility tab of the Properties of your QuickTimePlayer.exe, as per the following document:
Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode
... again, make sure that none of the boxes in there are checked (not just the compatibility mode box).
Any help with your 2096?
