Change name of SMB share I connect to

Hi Everyone,

I searched on this but didn't see an exact match to my problem/issue. I connect to my work server from home using SMB. The name of the share is my username but I'd like to call it something else. Clicking on the share on the desktop does not provide the option to change its name. Is there a way while connecting that I can give the share another name? Thanks in advance.

Joe

I have only tried this with an AFP mount and I did not try it across multiple logins or reboots. But, once my AFP share was mounted, I was able to make an alias of it and rename the alias. That didn't keep the actual device from showing up in the Finder sidebar or desktop when actually mounted, though. Finder's prefs should be able to be set up to not show networked drives in the Finder's sidebar or on the desktop, though. Your only other option, I think, would be to have your work's IT guy change your login name on the SMB mount.

The name is determined by the SMB server. That's the reason OS X doesn't let you edit the name.

You can edit the netbios name server name and define sharpoints in /etc/smb.conf

under the Global section add

netbios name = mymacsnetbiosname

you set your server name

server string = macintosh

and custom sharepoints use the following type of syntax

sharepoint
path = /pathto/sharefolder
read only = No
inherit permissions = Yes
guest ok = no

the word sharepoint should be enclosed with square brackets [ ]
