Change name of SMB share I connect to

The name is determined by the SMB server. That's the reason OS X doesn't let you edit the name.

I have only tried this with an AFP mount and I did not try it across multiple logins or reboots. But, once my AFP share was mounted, I was able to make an alias of it and rename the alias. That didn't keep the actual device from showing up in the Finder sidebar or desktop when actually mounted, though. Finder's prefs should be able to be set up to not show networked drives in the Finder's sidebar or on the desktop, though. Your only other option, I think, would be to have your work's IT guy change your login name on the SMB mount.

You can edit the netbios name server name and define sharpoints in /etc/smb.conf

under the Global section add

netbios name = mymacsnetbiosname

you set your server name

server string = macintosh

and custom sharepoints use the following type of syntax

sharepoint
path = /pathto/sharefolder
read only = No
inherit permissions = Yes
guest ok = no

the word sharepoint should be enclosed with square brackets [ ]

Those configs are done on the server to define the sharepoint name and path. I realise that the info is not useful to you unless you have access to the server administration.

For fear of being accused of threadjacking, one last question, then I'll butt out of this thread: To do a similar sort of thing on an AFP server (if one wanted to do it the "hard" way as opposed to doing it the Sharepoints way), what would one do?
