letterbox/pillarbox question

I have 3000 .avi files that I need to convert to for upload to youtube. I want them to all end up at the same size (477x359). They are all start different sizes though, and I cannot get Compressor to maintain the aspect ratio of the source and letterbox or pillarbox the rest of the frame. Does anyone have any ideas of how to do this?
