Is 10.5.3 causing vertical alignment issue with Samsung CLX-2160?

I have been having an issue with printing from my iMac lately. The vertical alignment seems to be off by about one centimeter, causing blank space at the bottom of print-outs, and print too close to the top of the page.

My printer is a multifunction colour laser, Samsung CLX-2160, that scans and photocopies. When I make a photocopy (i.e. not connected to my iMac), it seems to work okay, so I don't think it's my multifunction device.

I've been reading here that people have been having printing issues with 10.5.3, some sounding a lot worse than my issue, but I couldn't find any posts for the Samsung CLX-2160 that I'm using. Someone listed a bunch of printers that were supported by "Gimp Print" or something like that, and I downloaded the beta version 3 from version tracker, but the help file didn't list my device on their list of supported printers so I didn't install it.

My printer is less than 6 months old, I didn't have this problem when I first installed Leopard. I don't print very often; I think the last time was about 8 weeks ago, and I didn't have this issue then. But since then I have installed the 10.5.3 update.

Should I uninstall the 10.5.3 update? Is there any way to do that? If not, is there going to be a 10.5.4 release soon? Or does someone know of any driver or whatever I could download. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks.

Hi Bruce,

After you mentioned the Samsung website, I looked and downloaded the most recent drivers they have there and installed them. They also had a firmware upgrade, and while it said it was for "All OS", the files it contained were .exe files for Windows.

I printed out something after installing new drivers and rebooting and the vertical alignment problem persists. How do I go about resetting the printer system?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Bruce,

It's fixed! I think that your suggestion of getting new printer drivers solved the problem. I did a test print out and still wasn't satisfied, although, I think at that point it was working the way it used to before I had the problem. Then I shredded the test page! Oops.

I searched the Apple Support pages to find out about resetting the printer. I repaired disk permissions first as per their advice, then reset the printer, added it again, and print out the document that I've been trying to print properly. And it worked fine.

Thanks for your help, I'm going to mark this question as answered and your post as solving it!

Hi Travis, sorry for contacting you on the boards but it seems you may be the only one who can help me. I'm thinking of investing in a CLX-2160 myself and was wondering how you were getting on. Were you able to survive with the bundled Samsung drivers on Leopard? Also have you upgraded to 10.5 as yet? Any help you can offer in way of this would be greatly appreciated. It seems like there aren't any budget colour laser AIO out there with great mac support!! 😟

Hi there, mpressive,

I have been very happy with my Samsung CLX-2160. Yes it is a budget colour laser AIO, with scanner and copying built in. It's a flat bed. It's also fairly compact. If I were you I would look into how much the replacement toner will cost. It's about $50-60 per colour cartridge here in Canada, so I'm not looking forward to replacing them. Also, a USB cable isn't included in the box with the printer, you will have to buy your own. I haven't had a problem with the drivers. If you read this thread you will see the problem I had when I upgraded to version 10.5.3. I'm now at 10.5.4 and haven't tested the printing lately as I don't use it very often. But the issue I had with it is solved.

It is a mac-friendly device. My iMac is my first mac, however, and it took me a long time to figure out how to get the scanner to talk to the iMac. It connects through USB, but you have to use the software "Image Capture" that I believe comes built into Mac OS X. The scanning part works fine, though, after I "discovered" Image Capture I scanned in a couple photos and it was great.

I've wanted a colour laser for about 15 years, since when I first used one at a job. My first laser was a black-and-white multifunction, by Brother. I bought that to replace a nasty ink-jet. After my bad ink-jet experience I resolved to go with laser, and I won't go back to ink now.

Anyhow, like you say, the Samsung CLX-2160 is an affordable machine. The printing is good, although I haven't printed out any high power graphics. I printed out the Canada Food Guide, which looked beautiful as it had a rainbow of food groups spread out over 6 pages. Like I said, the only thing you want to pay attention to is how much the replacement toner costs. You will also want to make sure that you can find it. I know Staples carries it near me.

I'd certainly happy to recommend this all-in-one. No, I don't work for Samsung. Good luck!

Hi Martin,

You're welcome for the info on the CLX-2160. Happy printing! 🙂

No doubt, about the mac. I am a very happy mac-user and have 100 solid reasons for
sticking with mac, and well, if I think of one for switching back, I'll let you know. But three
years into my iMac purchase and I'm more satisfied with this than I've ever been and more
than I think I ever possibly would be satisfied with a PC. My only regret about having a mac
is that I wish I had one sooner!

Hi

I have just unpacked a new Samsung CLX-2160 MFP but I cannot get it to scan whatsoever. It will print, it will copy, but scanning to the Mac: no. I can't get the supplied software to load and Apple Image Capture will preview but not scan. It won't scan to the its front mounted USB slot when I insert a Mac formated memory stick too. Any suggestions would go down very well.
