Change sounds on iMac

How do I change sounds associated with activities on my iMac using Leopard? I want to customize which sounds are used or not used at all (such as starting up, shutting down, etc) and add my own sounds, too. I know how to change the ALERT sound to the one's preinstalled via Leopard but what about others as I could customize in Windows.

Start with a search in these forums for *finder sounds*.

Here's how to change the move to and empty trash sounds.

Find the sounds you want to use when putting stuff in the trash and when emptying the trash. Convert your sounds to aif, save them in some convenient place. Replace the two sound files "move to trash" and "drag to trash" inside the Finder and Dock folders, respectively, with the one you want for putting things in the trash and the "empty trash" one inside the Finder folder with the new one for emptying the trash. Ensure that you rename the new ones the same as the originals. I usually copy the originals and add a .bak suffix so I can restore the sounds to their original condition.

$ open /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/

$ sudo cp /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ finder/move\ to\ trash.aif /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ finder/move\ to\ trash.aif.bak

$ sudo cp /Volumes/Documents/PT\ Docs/System\ Changes/\ Leopard\ changes/chg\ sys\ trash\ sounds/move\ to\ trash.aif /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ finder/move\ to\ trash.aif

$ sudo cp /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ finder/empty\ trash.aif /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ finder/empty\ trash.aif.bak

$ sudo cp /Volumes/Documents/PT\ Docs/System\ Changes/\ Leopard\ changes/chg\ sys\ trash\ sounds/empty\ trash.aif /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ finder/empty\ trash.aif

$ sudo cp /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ dock/drag\ to\ trash.aif /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ dock/drag\ to\ trash.aif.bak

$ sudo cp /Volumes/Documents/PT\ Docs/System\ Changes/\ Leopard\ changes/chg\ sys\ trash\ sounds/drag\ to\ trash.aif /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds/ dock/drag\ to\ trash.aif

When finished with those changes, OPTION-click the Finder's Dock icon and select RELAUNCH.
