Help Please!!! iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen comes up with 'unkown error (1418)'

My friend recently got a used 2nd gen shuffle. It isn't recodnized in either my comp, itunes, or the 'stop devices' pannel unless i try the help options like unintalling the device and reinstalling it, but even when it is (occasionally) recodnized and appears in iTunes, it comes up saying 'this ipod needs to be reformatted to run in windows.' So I click yes to reformat, but it is unsuccesful every time. I also tried just plain restoring and updating but that doesn't work either. It comes up with, verbatum, "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unkown error occured (1418)." I've been through every help menu and all the advanced solutions, nothing seems to be working. Any help?
