Q: Customizing Front Row icons

I am simply trying to change the icons for the Front Row program as well as delete things like Podcasts and possibly even change the names of the menus. For the first task of changing the icons, that has proven to be more difficult than originally planned. I figured that I could change them through the Resources folder like any other program, but apparently this is not so. Can someone show me how to AT LEAST do the icon changes? All help is greatly appreciated.

    Well, ladies and gentleman:

After hours and hours of searching, google-ing, sleep withdrawals, and crying (maybe not those last two), I have answered my own question. It is actually not as difficult as it may sound, however, changing the Front Row icons is not done by the same process as changing the icons for any other application. Please email me at ashmacpro at gmail dot com if you want the instructions. Thanks for reading.

I have received a great deal of webmail asking for the instructions to get this done. So I decided to post the instructions in the board. If you have any questions, send me a reply to loftash at gmail dot com..I changed my webmail address from the one above. Enjoy!

    HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row
Right click on Front Row and go to Show Package Contents
Contents/PlugIns (this is where the trick is)

In the PlugIns folder, you will see a different folder for each of the menus in Front Row (e.g. Settings, Music, Sources, etc.). It is in these folders that you will find the actual icons used in Front Row. Be sure to back them all up before replacing them. You will, of course, need administrative rights to change these, so just type in your password when prompted.

One cool thing that I did is I have 3 of my icons displayed as text in “blurred” mode and an icon or picture when the menu item is selected. Example: My music menu icon has an icon of the word ‘MUSIC’ when it is in blurred mode (in the background), but when I scroll down to the music menu and the icon is in the front, I have an icon displaying a speaker. I have included the link to the text icons that I am using for blurred mode. You’ll know what I mean by “blurred” when you start to dive into the folders in Contents/PlugIns. The link is to DeviantArt, but don’t worry, you don’t have to have an account to download icons from the site and it is completely safe. I have downloaded more icons from this site than I care to mention.

Have fun, and don’t be afraid to experiment with it until you get just the right combination of icons to really make it your own. I am so proud to know that my Front Row is unlike anybody else’s. Let me know if any of this didn’t make sense or if you have any other questions. I pretty much spend all of my spare time getting to know my Mac as I am a first-time Mac owner and have only had it a few months. Good luck!

    Hello,

This is a great topic! What about adding a menu item to front row; Do you have any knowledge on how to do that?
