plastic case splitting

This has suddenly happened to mine this very evening. The thing is, when it happened to my daughter's macbook a few months back I thought she'd been typically careless.
Searching on this discussion site and elsewhere on the web it clearly happens so often that its obviously a design flaw. My macbook was bought in Aug 2008 so I'll be hauling it back to the Apple Store in Glasgow next weekend. Bah!

That's Aug 2007, of course!

Take it in and get the case replaced. I've had to do it twice for that same crack, and it was replaced under warranty both times.

I have a 6 month old MacBook and the right hand corner started splitting on Sunday past. I contacted Mac customer support (we don't have a Store in Belfast) and the Mac man (who was surprisingly rude) told me this wouldn't be covered in warranty as I had obviously abused the laptop... however if you do a google for splitting cases you get a ton of similar episodes. Does your split look like this? Mine does, this has been a known issue with users for a few years but Mac don't seem to want to own up... I'll be watching this discussion with interest and will be back in contact with Mac pushing for a free cover replacement which other users seem to have obtained quite readily.

My MacBook did the same small sliver-type split on the lower right side. I'm sure if I take it to the Apple Store they'll fix it but what has happen to the quality of Apple Products? The DVD player on mine didn't work right out of the box and had to be replaced. Now the cases are cracking?

That's it exactly. I phoned up and the guy booked me in to the Apple Shop tomorrow at 9:20. I'll let you know what he says.

This has just happened to my Macbook tonight - the case over the IR display is cracked.

It's about four or five months old - I love it, but I think this design flaw is bad show on Apple's part.

I'll be taking it into the Genius Bar tomorrow.

Took it through to Glasgow and they fixed it under warranty. Would have cost me £111 otherwise - 55 squid for the case top and keyboard, 40 for labour and VAT on top. Not good if it stuffs up in another 10 months....

Thanks for the update. I will definitely be pushing for a freebie repair. But I'm not exactly brimming with confidence about the case not splitting again.

Took it to the Genius Bar on Saturday and they called Sunday to say it was ready for pickup. They replaced the keyboard and upper casing - look like new.

Bad design but I can't fault the quality of their maintenance.

I have had two pieces fall off the left side and just now noticed a big sliver coming off but still attached on the right side above the sleep light. The macbook hasn't been moved from my desk in weeks.

This is odd.

Looking at the 2 main places where pieces fell off the Macbook - It is directly under the plastic "stops" above the screen on each side.

That is what is making the plastic right under the stops get weak and break off, it seems.
