Safari refuses to install.. keeps on saying I need 10.5.2 or Greater..

Just had this same problem today. I have 10.5.3. All of the sudden, it would not open. Tried to install both versions of Safari, but nothing. Tried Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, but they both did not help.

The first problem is that you deleted something without understanding the ramifications of what you were doing. You need to stop that or you will hose your entire system. Just because something crashes or it won't startup does not mean the problem will be solved by reflexively deleting it.

You'll need to go back to your Mac OS X install discs and look for one that says Optional Installs and use that to install Safari. First you need to go to /Applications/Library/Receipts and remove the Safari311.pkg receipt.

I know there are two different versions. I downloaded the correct version first, and got the message that I needed 10.5.2 (I have 10.5.3). So I thought I'd try the other version just to see if I could get that working, but that version would also not load.

I didn't delete anything. I have used a Mac since the first one in 1984 and I keep 50 of them running at a school, so I know not to just delete files.

Deleting was not the problem.

Like I said previously, you need to remove the receipt for Safari, then use your Optional Installs disc for Mac OS X to install Safari. Once you've done that, you can use Software Update to get the most recent version.

Since there is no Application/Library, I assume you mean HD/Library/Receipts. There are no Safari packages of any type there.

Yes, it should be HD/Library/Receipts. But if there are no Safari receipts there, you should have no problem reinstalling Safari from the Optional Installs disc of Mac OS X.

OK, this is weird. Safari is now working just fine. I did not do anything. I contacted my ISP (Comcast) just to check if they were in the middle of an upgrade or something to make Safari temporarily unusable. But no, there was no work going on.

I'm going to have to chalk it up to one of the "mysteries of life". I don't know if the original user is still having problems.
