External Monitor with Bootcamp

I am running Bootcamp on my MBP (Leopard 10.5.2). Is it possible to run a second monitor in the Windows partition? I am running XP Pro, SP2. I tried plugging in a monitor, but it didn't seem to recognize that it was there. Am I doing something wrong, or is it not possible? Thanks in advance.

Support for external monitor is limited in Apple display drivers. Instead you can use more recent drivers for your GPU. Before installing any, make sure you uninstall the current one.

For ATI:
Alternative 1: Go to http://www.omegadrivers.net/ and download ati driver. (Only for XP)
Alternative 2: Download latest ATI driver for your chipset from ATI but not mobility one. For instance if your GPU is ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, download Radeon X1600 driver from ati. Then mod it with modtool from http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

For NVIDIA:
Download your driver from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

please confirm if I understod you correctly:
are you saying that Apple displays will work in windows XP but others don't?

I have the same problem, like many others, and there is a lot of discussion about this in this forum. I have ATI radeon X1600. People are having problems with Nvidia also. I have tried the DVI-port with a couple of monitors, but with no luck.

Will the moddded drivers work for sure?
I would not want to mess up my system just to try this, since I have just installed a fresh windows and everything else is working really well right now.

If the solution is to buy a Apple display, I will surely do that, even thought they are quite expensive...

No, sorry i did not express myself clearly. I should say support for external monitor is limited in Apple GPU drivers. You do not need to buy an Apple display, for sure.

Modded drivers just work great. I am using them for over 9 months now, i have not had any problems at all. I am sure it will not mess up your system, as long as you uninstall apple GPU drivers before installing the modded driver.

No luck with my iMac. The check mark is there for "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor", and I can go through the motions, with all dialogs presented ok as expected.

Still no response from the second monitor.

I even see the Omega 3.8.442 in the pull down choice (right-click desktop / Properties / Settings). (Yes, I know of the "typo" as per the gentleman's README file explaining it should read 4.8.442).

I'd love to use my second monitor in XP, so if you have any troubleshooting tips, it'd surely be most appreciated! Thanks, too, for posting what you did here!

Q: As per the Omega prompt to uninstall the original ATI drivers prior to proceeding, must I re-boot after that uninstall action before running the Omega driver program? (I tried it both ways, but no luck either way).

Regards,
Shane

I have found a solution on my MBP after reading a lot of threads. I have the 15-inch 2.5GHz version with the nVidia graphics card. In Windows XP using BootCamp, the nVidia driver was installed and has a task tray icon in the lower-right of the screen. You have several choices with the options when right-clicking on this icon to get your LCD Projector or whatever else to work. Here are 2 solutions (you must have the LCD or TV connected to the video port on the Mac :

1. Right-click the nVidia icon in the task tray. Highlight 'nView Display Settings' and then 'Dualview'. You can click on 'Laptop Display + <the model of your LCD>' to have the nVidia utility switch your laptop to extend the desktop. You will have your main desktop on your laptop screen and a blank screen on the LCD. You can drag windows to the right of your laptop desktop screen and they will move over to the LCD screen.

2. Right-click the nVidia icon in the task tray. Highlight 'nView Display Settings' and then 'Single display'. If you click the model of your LCD projector or TV in the list, the laptop display will go blank and the screen will switch to the LCD giving you what you want by toggling the display as normal in Windows. You will need to work with the resolution settings as the switch seems to have its own independent settings than the normal Windows desktop.

Hope this helps!

I think most of the people here knows how to extend your desktop to a external monitor in windows, this is not the problem here.

Well, anyways I SOLVED IT, for me atleast.

THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE. Connect your monitor to your MBP with a DVI calbe. This means that your monitor has to have a DVI input. Do not use a VGA connector or any DVI to VGA adapters. MBP just won't recognice the monitor with adapters.

If your monitor doesn't have a DVI input, get a monitor that has, sad but true. I bought a Benq by the way.

Try this and post your experiences.

I think this baby is SOLVED.

I have an Infocus projector that has DVI input, but the cable that came with it was from VGA to DVI. I assume they expect only PC users to use the projector. From my MCP I can display through the projector fine from the Mac 10.4.11 partition (using hte DVI to VGA adapter that came with the computer and plugging it into the VGA to DVI adapter. However, that configuration won't work on the Bootcamp/Windows XP side of the computer. Did I see the comment that if I got a DVI to DVI cable, the PC side would work properly with the projector?

How about using the MCP TV output? I want to use NetAthlon 2.0 on the Windows XP/Bootcamp partition of my MacBook Pro and then send the image to my TV. There seems to be a signal transfer there, but it is all jumbled. The TV output works fine from the OS 10.4.11 partition. In this case I was using the DVI to TV adapter plug that came with the computer and tapping off the TV Composite signal. Any reason that the PC side doesn't work?

I'm running Vista via boot camp on my MBP. I need to plug my MBP into projectors to do client presentations. Projectors almost always require the DVI>VGA connector and unfortunatley the MBP (running Vista) does not seem to detect the external monitor. I decided to install the Nvidia drivers but going to nvidia.com I got the following:

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 167.63 The manufacturer of this system requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site.

The GeForce M series and GeForce Go series notebook GPUs use drivers that have been customized by the notebook manufacturers to support hot key functions, power management functions, lid close and suspend/resume behavior. NVIDIA has worked with some notebook manufacturers to provide notebook-specific driver updates, however, most notebook driver updates must come from the notebook manufacturer. Additionally, the desktop GeForce graphics drivers will not install on Geforce M series and Quadro M series notebook GPU's.

I am having problems mirroring to an external monitor with my new MacBook that I got this past June. I have a second Macbook that I had bought last May, that has gone kaput, that didn't have any problems with that.

Something I noticed is that when I installed the boot camp drivers on my other Macbook, there was an Intel icon that appeared in the system tray that gave me many options including the mirroring. When I installed the boot camp drivers on this Macbook, that Intel icon is no where to be found.

Why would I be able to do it on one but not the other and I used the same boot camp drivers?

I can see your problem is that you are using devices that don't have DVI inputs. You are using DVI-VGA adapters or some sort, and you have XP or Vista in bootcamp, ofcourse.

Most or probably all Macbooks that have windows can only connect devices with DVI inputs. You most likely won't get a connection with a device that has a VGA input or when you have to use a cable other that DVI-DVI.

Using your external monitor as the primary monitor is not possible with Macbooks.

I beg to differ.

I have two MacBooks. One I bought last May which was a 13.3" MacBook Black with a 120 GB hard drive and a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor. The other I bought this June which was also a 13.3" MacBook Black with a 250 GB hard drive and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor. The former MacBook, after installing Windows via boot camp, I had no problems using the external monitor. I was able to mirror and even use it as my primary monitor. For some reason, on my new MacBook, I am not able to do that. One thing I did notice was that on the former MacBook after installing the Boot Camp drivers, an intel icon appeared in the system tray. That did not show up after installing the drivers on the latter MacBook.

Now one thing I just did, I looked at the boxes for both MacBooks and saw that they have two different chipsets which could possibly be the reason why it works on one and not the other. The former has an Intel GMA 950 graphics processor and the latter has an Intel X3100 graphics processor. Maybe the drivers for the X3100 don't allow it. I'm not sure but I'm still looking.
