Superdrive reads some discs but not others!

Do a search on the Matshita superdrives in this forum. There are tons of posts regarding this problematic drive. The Matshita drive in my iMacCoreDuo is very tempermental to say the least and refuses to burn most dvds.

Have you taken a look at the discs it cannot read? Scratches and fingerprints might be the culprits. Not being able to burn a DVD might indicate you have a flaky drive - it it might be a software/OS issue or bad media. My 24" iMac has the supposedly lousy Matsushita drive and it is happily burning away CDs, DVDs, and dual layer DVDs. I also use quality media.

I am having similar problems on an iMac 24" but only with blank or "home-made" discs. Apple tell me that the problem is with the brand of discs. They should what will work and what wont, and tell us, not leave it for to determine by trial and error.

I am hoping the other posts suggestion about similar issues will help.

I was having a similar problem. All of my blank DVD -R discs would spin in the drive for 10-30 seconds, the drive would make some clicking sounds and then eject the disc. DVD DL discs would have no problems. I tried resetting PRAM, but that did not help. I tried multiple brands of DVD -R's but that did not help either. I finally went and tried a lens cleaner (with the tiny brushes-Fellowes). I know these are not recommended for slot loading drives and I was potentially asking for trouble, but I needed a solution. Fortunately, the cleaner disc was read by the system properly, the movie played and the tests ran without a problem. Once it was complete, I popped in a DVD -R and it load without a hitch. Have burned 2-3 discs now without a problem.

And now, this is the 9th thread to which I have replied. My optical drive has died too. It seems to be a VERY common fault.

Anyone at Apple sitting up yet?
