morrisdatter,

Try this "quick fix" for 'iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."
(There's an article for it on Apple's support site, but I'm not finding it right now)

Go to your Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Select QuickTime and click Remove
Select iTunes and click Repair
Restart the computer
See if you can open iTunes

I seem to have solved my problem and it may help the rest of you with your iTunes not opening.

I found this support document from apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926?viewlocale=en_US

I followed EVERY SINGLE STEP all the way down to downloading the Windows Install Cleanup. Then I rebooted and re-installed a new, clean download of iTunes (it installed QuickTime, as well.)

I then wondered if RealPlayer was conflicting somehow. So I opened RealPlayer (I just have RealPlayer Basic) and went to Tools, Preferences, Media Types and took all OFF associations of any media types. There was only one type that was set to open with RealPlayer - a streaming video. Took all those off. Clicked OK and closed RealPlayer.

I can now open iTunes - it took awhile to open - and it now also recognizes my iPod (I have a 3rd generation nano). That took awhile, as well, before it showed up.

But it's working now. Hope this helps someone else. I THINK it was the association with RealPlayers that iTunes did not like. Which *****. But it seems to be the case.
