How to start - IPT does nothing

Sorry to be so ignorant. Just got an IPT for my wife. It is charging. I see no way to get to the home screen. We don't care about Itunes for now but I would like for her to see how the internet works. Do I wait for it to complete charging or is there a way to start using it?

I just turned mine on when I got it. When It's fully charged, the "gas" gauge will be full. Push the round button at the bottom of the screen to turn on. You will have to slide your finger to the right to bring the home screen up. IF you don't have any security on your home network, you MAY be able to connect just by touching the "Safari" button.

More likely, you will have to touch the "Setting" button, go into WiFi and set it up for a connection. The "eMail" program has to be setup just like any other mail program.

It's a fun piece of equipment and should provide you with several hours of amusement while you get into the finer stuff. Below are some links to iTouch operations that someone here posted.

You can ask.
The thing is, it needs to be tied to an iTunes account for things like using the WiFi iTunes store. I can see that being a stumbling block on that road. But maybe if you explain that it's a gift, for an anniversary no less, and that you have located a copy of the appropriate OS but by the time it arrives you won't be able to return it if needed, someone might take pity and maybe let you set up an iTunes account and do the sync.

On that thought, do you have any mac-centric friends who could be pressed into duty there?

Finally, if she already knows about the gift, maybe take her to the store and have her play with one there. I surfed for about a half hour before committing. Posted on a couple forums, checked out some of my bookmarks to make sure they would work, and in general just played around to get the feel for surfing on a small screen. I was hooked.

Of course, if she doesn't know, you can do the same thing. Make an excuse to swing in, play with a few things, accidentally end up at the iPod table, and get her scrolling and pinching on the screen.

Thank you again. I guess I will talk to someone at the apple store to try to have them set it up. We don't care about an itunes account or the wifi itunes store. She wants it to use with our (and other) wifi setups for browsing and email. She'll probably copy some CDs to transfer to the IPT at some point. I'm very disappointed it is so useless out of the box. Been using Macs for 20 years and never had such a unfriendly product. If the mac store can't help, I guess I pay them the restocking fee and chalk it up to a bad apple experience. I appreciate your help.

Aloha!

You put the name of the network there. But there should be a list of available networks above that. If you would like more help, I would suggest starting with a search of topic names dealing with WiFi. There are literally hundreds here, and I'm sure one already has the info you need posted in it. Threadjacking is really not helpful to you, as you put this in a thread that has nothing to do with the issue you are having, and may only attract folks who have no knowledge of what you are experiencing (namely, me).

I hope this advice gets you pointed in the right direction.
