Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

iMac Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

I also now have a yellow vertical line and a purple one... same serial range as those mentioned.

This stinks... If the supplier to Apple has made bad panels, then I don't see why Apple wouldn't hold them responsible to cover the repair charges/panel replacement.

Seems like someone in Apple's supply chain isn't enforcing quality control and contractual agreements for component recalls...

Apple? Are you going to hose us all with bad panels or do the right thing and go after the panel vendor to fix the problem? Even the Wintel PC guys fix these supply quality issues outside the normal warranty.

All of a sudden, my 17" iMac has a yellow vertical line on the screen, at all times. I've restarted, I did a restore to my personal settings (I backed up before today, before the line appeared).
I'm waiting for 6 a.m. PST to call support.

Welcome to the club Is your iMac still under warranty? because if not, be prepared to pay somewhere between $500 to $900 USD for the repair depending on what part of the world you are located and even though, it is not guaranteed that after the LCD is repaired, the lines will not appear again, very soon, as soon as one or two months later.

I have around 30 lines and counting.

Guys, shall we action something or just talk about it? I have spent thousands of GBP's with Apple over the years (from the 80's to 2008 i might add) and i think this is simply not on. If everyone else agrees i think we should all write in or at least backup a generic letter to the powers that be @ Apple.

It is totally forbiden on these forums to post sedicious and dangerous threads, the kind that can make Apple uncomfortable, so watch out with what you read, write, because there is always the danger to be banned, locked or plainly deleted

State update: iMac did return with replaced LCD panel, and for several days everything seemed fine. Unfortunately, the pattern of lines reappearing is in place here, too. Another color (blue, instead of yellow), another location (right third of screen instead of former left side), but line is back. Alone as of today.

I believe, it is quite challenging issue, as nowhere there have been seen explanation of what's happening. What Apple thinks all along - can it be, those forums miss any attention of company - let at very personal opinion level?

Gosh there are nearly 900 people have signed it, I thought this was a localised problem. I wonder how many people are suffering the same problem, but haven't signed it.

I have used the feedback, but these are apparently only read, not replied to... so how does one write to Apple and then expect a meaningful reply?

If you would like to send feedback to Apple about a product, please use the appropriate selection at http://www.apple.com/feedback.

    UPDATE.

After a lengthy phone call, i was transferred to a Level 2 support agent and my warranty has been extended to cover the repair to my screen, it would appear this problem IS acknowledged by Apple after all. Thankyou Apple

So did I hooray, what a relief, just got to take it back to the dealer. Faith restored for me. As the other chap said I had to explain the issue to the applecare guy and get him to pass me up the chain. After politely explaining the issue again he gave me apple care for two weeks to get it fixed. Yippee!
