Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

I think that Apple has come to an agreement with either the manufacturer or their insurer or both
I took my sad 'line' affected W series 17" Imac into the Apple Store Sydney with a Genius appointment and the staff didn't question a single thing. They booted it up , went yikes and then immediately arranged a repair. No ifs buts or maybes. I have the iMac back after 8 days and with a new screen at no charge
    Bravo Apple

Oh I have woken to find four brightly coloured vertical lines so it looks like I have also joined this elite club of 2007 imac owners.

I have just spoken to Apple tech support and they are repairing the fault for me under exception which I am so pleased about. Time to get backing my computer up I think!

Thank you for this thread I thought it was all over for my trusty mac!

I've had 7 lines going down my imac since July. I got used to them but i got my 7th line the other day and i just got ****** off. So i found this thread yesterday and heard of the success of people getting a custom contract warranty to fix the screen. So i called apple today and i told the lady politly of my problem and she said she had to talk to her head of repair or something like that. When she got back to me she said that they know about the problem with the serial number and they would give me a custom contract warranty to repair my computer. But i have also read about people getting their LCD replaced but the lines reoccuring again. I hope it dosnt happen to me. Well im backing everything up,, i cant believe how much junk i have and stuff that im not willing to backup ( like photoshop parallels etc ) cause i can just redownload those.
    MY ITUNES LIBRARY IS 20GB!

Well thanks guys for telling me about your success of getting apple to fix it for free when your out of warranty cause that got me calling them

Count me in as one of the sad and P-O'd iMac owners. Bought mine in November 2006 for my husband. Tonight I got a 1-1/4" wide white vertical band top to bottom, dead center of the screen. Reset NVRAM, ran hardware test, all came clean. I thought that it was just a bad LCD screen, but after reading all of your comments, I guess I'd better back up all of the hubby's files before the logic board dies.

I will try calling Apple to see if I can get a free remedy to this problem. Not financially ready to fix or replace this iMac!

I am definitely disappointed, and somewhat unnerved about Apple products. Less than 6 months after I bought the iMac, my two-year-old Powermac G5 died. Local Apple repair shop could not fix it; wanted big $$$ to try replacing the motherboard. I'm a freelance graphic designer, so downtime is as costly as having to buy a new machine. Replaced with a Mac Pro and got the AppleCare warranty, making my credit card company very happy. It's almost two years old now, so I'm gritting my teeth and crossing fingers.

Followup...called Apple Care and they agreed to repairs out of warranty. No hassles; I'm quite happy. Received a case number to bring to my repair center. I will post the results of this repair, as I will be putting this iMac through its paces before the 90 day repair warranty is up.

I thank Apple for standing behind their products, and won't be peeling their sticker off of my car after all

I have talked to a supervisor and their supervisor and they say there is nothing that they can do. That this is not a known problem. I also said is there anything that you can do then about the cost of the repair. That $1000 is insane to put back into this computer. Once again, they said no.
I think that this is a disgrace.
They also said these threads are just disgruntled people and that you can google anything that goes wrong and someone will be complaining. Aren't you all glad that no one cares people?

Have you taken the computer into an Apple Retail Store? If so, may I ask which one? Are the lines vertical or horizontal?

It took me a couple of calls to get a supervisor who would help. The 1st couple of people didn't have a clue.

Our 17" iMac, April 2006 model, W860xxxxx2N series, got the first vertical line about six months back at about 1/3 from right side of screen. Now, over the past few days the screen has developed 8 very closely spaced lines near the right corner and two more near the older one. I live in India so I was wondering if Apple would do anything about it.

I have an iMac C2D that I bought in November '06, with a W8XXX serial number. Earlier this week it developed a magenta vertical line as described in previous posts. Like my other 5 other Macs, I did not purchase Applecare - although in retrospect I probably should have.

I contacted Apple Support via web, had them call me via phone, and they were able to give a Customer Satisfaction number, stating the repair would be performed free of charge. The Mac is now at my local Apple store awaiting a replacement screen. After owning a dozen or so Macs in the past 20 years, Apple service comes through again and again: all you need to do is ask.

ScienceMan has been bitten by this problem too:

ScienceMan don't like it one bit! I took it to the Genius Bar in West Edmonton Mall and they told me I was on my own.

I'd certainly like to see an official repair extension program, but failing that, let us trade these things for a reasonable Apple Store credit on a new machine. Apple can avoid the repairs, we can get new machines, everyone wins.

    Update:

Phoned Apple support and told them about the problem. Less than 10 minutes later I was authorized for repair at no cost. No arguing, no muss, no fuss - just a simple "We'll get that taken care of for you sir".

    Now that's service.

So it appears that the genius bars may be out-of-the-loop on this unadvertised warranty extension. Phone Apple before you give up on this vertical line problem.
