Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

I've got a 2006-model iMac 5.1, and for a while I've had two vertical lines - one red, the other cyan - on my monitor. Sometimes there's been a green one, but it's gone now. Recently, however, a big block of white translucence, running from top to bottom, has appeared left to center on my screen. I checked my Repairs and Service Coverage, and it's expired. I tried looking at the Phone Help stuff, but it costs about $50. What should I do? Would it be too much to have it repaired by Apple? Should I go and get a new monitor (and set it as my main screen), or buy a new Mac? What should I do?

    Hi,
Is it a 17" iMac? Check the serial number -- it's on the bottom of the stand. Mine has a serial number W8... (I can't recall it exactly). Most of the people who've had it fixed here (outside warranty), including myself, called Apple Care and explained the issue. Hopefully your iMac is covered by the extended warranty and they will set up an appointment for you to bring your iMac in for repair.
    Hope that helps,
    David

So after my third display failure in 4 years, the last one after one day(!) I call Apple Support again, and move up from Customer Service rep to Senior Supervisor to Customer Relations person; I am now getting a new 2010 21.5in 3GHz iMac in exchange for mine(!!) Supervisors and above agree that they have a serious problem and don't know how to fix it except by swapping out LCDs.
Their word; "you obviously have no confidence in our replacement LCDs" - too right! But thanks Apple for finally "doing the right thing."

Thanks to all on this thread who alerted me to the repeat failures, which are obviously increasing with each year that goes by since 2006.

Moral: keep trying, politely, sad rather than angry; you can always ask to speak to the next person up the line at Apple. Good luck to all who continue to suffer. Don't wait when the first lines appear; they will only get more numerous.

Great to hear you got satisfaction there, peeveeb. That's really very generous of Apple -- there are very few companies who would do something like that. All the best.

I have a 2.66 GHz iMac8.1 and there are approx 8-10 line running vertically. Apple are saying that this fault does not effect my model and therefore I have to pay! It looks like the same fault you guys are talking about although there are no images

That is a newer machine and it is not covered under the Apple policy that is being used to repair our Macs. So that is a separate issue that you will need to take up with Apple, especially if your Mac is out of warranty.

Thanks David, my fault sounds identical to the faults being discussed, could it be the same? There are about 16 vertical lines that are very visible with a dark background

It sounds to be the same. It is most likely a bad display. Especially if you find that the lines do not show in a screen shot. If they are not in a screen shot, they are not likely generated by the GPU, so they are directly appearing on the display.

They are directly on the screen as the screenshot and remote does not show them. Does this mean I have to pay?

That is an issue no one here can answer. Our Macs are in a program for repair because it was a known, widespread issue that seems to involve a series of faulty displays, all for the same model and serial number series.

That is different from the occasional faulty display that you may have encountered.

It is between you and Apple if they would repair it.

Thanks, David, for the advice. I just got off the phone with Apple, and sure enough my computer falls into the range of computers that are eligible for repair. For awhile, I was hesitant to call because I got my computer back in January of 2006 and it powerpc based. But then I thought that it was worth at least trying, and now I'm so glad that I did. The rep who helped me was really cool and didn't give me any static. At first, she wanted to set up an appointment with my local Apple store to find out what the problem was, but then I asked her if she could check to see if my serial # qualified. When she got back to me, the answer was "yes" and an appointment was made for the repair. Thanks again!

Got my iMac back today, with a new LCD panel. No idea why the other one gave up after only a few days but I'm fairly confident that the the root cause of the problem has now been fixed. It's great to have it back again, anyway. Thanks again to everyone who's posted to this thread over the years.

I'm afraid I will have to bring my iMac in again. There is a 2 inch vertical band of shimmering pixels on the right of the screen. Wifi seems to be unstable too (sometimes it just stops working and I have to reboot) but that may be unrelated. I don't think the core of this problem is in the LCD panel at all but is on the logic board (as it boots up, the panel is clearly fine and it's only when the Apple logo appears that the shimmering begins).

I'd like to add myself to this list of lucky people if I may?

I noticed last night, my iMac (late 2006, 17", Core2Duo, W860...) has a pretty green stripe down the screen. Just the one for now.

I will be phoning Apple on Monday, but before I do, can anyone from the UK tell me if they have had similar experience, what reaction they got from Apple, and what telephone number they used for Apple? And, of course, whether you succeeded in getting the iMac repaired etc.

Very grateful for all the comments and advice from all contributors on here - always comforting to know you're not the only one in the same hole!

    Hi Chris,

I would call this number: 0844 209 0611. I currently live in Portugal and was confused at first as to what number I should call but in the end called the equivalent of the number I've given you above for Portugal (it's the AppleCare number). I figured if it was the wrong number, they would just tell me so a. I think you'll be fine so calling that number. Post back to say how you got on.

    cheers,

    David
