Q: vertical lines - there for sure

I want to share my success of getting iMac, that was demoed for a while, before I became user and warranty time started ticking for me. Initially unhappy to discover, that unit was on display at some computer shop (via traces of activities), I am now extremely happy to be found in position to be covered by 12 months warranty, once famous vertical lines issue is there, as it should (same unfortunate serial number). Only weeks were left for this joy to happen.

On the other hand, I am posting this to encourage Apple looking at the essence of problem, and stop playing unaware - when the rest of the world knows issue very well, it would be surprising, that otherwise great company would behave like it does now. If we, Apple users, are goodwilled to slightly overpay for our gadgets, surely we do this with trust in Apple as decent manufacturer of reliable equipment. If manufacturing turns out to have defects (having that for particular serie is sure sign), we, users, and Apple are finding ourselves at crossroads: either our favorite company does right thing to protect our expectations, or we no longer expect equipment to be reliable, we though it should be.

If my PC screens are more robust, than those in Mac, and if there is nobody to stand on our side in such discoveries - well, you got idea.

Personally, I am happy to have warranty, as described. But it is only luck. One cannot expect be lucky all the time.

Apple, please address issue as needed, I want to be able buying your next product.

Interesting post by Timmothy. Does anyone know what part is faulty here - or is it multiple parts?

From what he said he's got a totally different problem. Mine and probably most others with this problem have the vertical lines even before OSX loads up. Booting in Safe mode doesn't help. Also, using bootcamp with Windows and the lines are still there.

    ARGH!

I now have 3 machines waiting to be fixed due to this issue. 5 have already been replaced.

One of the dead screens today was replaced just 6 weeks ago!

    26 imacs, 2006, U2N. 8 dead so far.

Thanks for posting David - fantastic to see someone with such a large number of machines post about the issue.

26 is a excellent sample size and gives the most accurate and realistic representation of the scale of the issue to date.

It shows that rather than it just being an isolated issue for a few unfortunate users, those with iMacs from that batch in fact have roughly 30% chance of screen failure.

have you had any other issues? (on more than one machine)

I have had lines on my screen for over a year now. It is getting to the point that it is difficult to see what is going on, so that I will need to purchase a new computer (because the cost to fix this is ridiculous and almost as much as the computer cost to begin with). I will not be able to purchase a Mac because of my general disappointment in the handling of this situation, which is so clearly a defect in the product. I love my computer and have always been happy with Apple, so this makes me sad, but a company must be held accountable. You have officially lost my business.

For those interested my serial number is QP6xxxxxx4M, and I do not believe this falls into the numbers most people have listed here so far. Guess I'm just lucky...

Well, you can always buy a second monitor which is still even less expensive than buying a PC with Windows and you will keep using your Mac OS.
I did it myself and even though, it is not the best solution, I can use my iMac pretty much as before and now, it is resting far away on the floor (well, not that far that I can not turn it on or use the DVD slot ;-))and facing backwards so I can NOT see it´s ugly face anymore.

Hey! I am nearly two months after second repair, and now things stay OK here. What is known, in the end: it was LCD panel replaced, and the panel was lucky to be not containing the same defect, that appeared soon after first replacement. The problem with first repair, as technician informed me, was apparently noticeable by closely observing contacts of LCD panel: they were not that perfect, even though initially new panel showed no weak signs - I believe, it is THEM, developing problem after year approx. for some reason, might be result of slow chemical reaction.

Once again, as said elsewhere - much depends on effort of iMac owner to prove the case to be what it is to Apple support/representatives.

No, my problem was not software related - the same lines have been seen under different OS on machine, also permanent fix happened to be fitting new LCD, that, hopefully, will not develop into the same problem in the long run (as it succeeded not developing it in the short). Unfortunately, for users, that experienced anomaly (and especially once past warranty/without free addressing), looks at brand new Apple devices have been deeply affected.

9 now. Apple have agreed to repair 4 currently broken screens for free. I am in discussions with customer services about refunding the costs of repairing the previous 5.

Well I just got vertical line #6 today! Another pink line. Unfortunately this line is close to the center of the display

Do not worry about counting any more Lenn5, in no time you will be having hundreds of lines and your monitor will be totally useless, so, I suggest you save money to buy a brand new monitor which is less expensive than paying for a repair at Apple´s or even better, buy a PC with Windows, you will not have certainly this kind of issues.

Not too worry. I can't count much higher than 7 anyways

I'm saving my pennies for a Mac notebook computer. This time I'll be sure to get Applecare with it.
