Help I cannot get Leopard to shut down and have a moving to trash freeze?

I have installed Leopard on my ibook and now cannot shut the computer down and cannot do a software update at all.

I now also have a second problem as i have a trash window with the the heading "preparing move to trash", this has been on screen now for 2 days and I cannot seem to close it or end task. Can anyone give me some much needed advice.

Hi.

You may need to relaunch the Finder. This will sort you trash problem. To do so, press the 'alt', 'cmd', and 'esc' buttons together to launch the force quit window. Then select 'Finder' and choose 'Relaunch'.

Let me know if this works

What happened first? The first problem or the second?
