Making an FTP server with MAC OSX Leopard

Hi,

I have 2 macs at home. I use one of them for work and I want to use the other one as a server. Both of them are running MAC OS 10.5.4 (Note they are not running the MAC OS X Server but just MAC OSX). They are both connected to a router (Netgear FM114P). I have installed PureFTP in the one dedicated to be a server. I have bought a domain name which now points at the external IP of the router, redirected that to the local IP of the server. Also I have open all necessary ports and enabled File Sharing, FTP, Remote Login...

However, I can't access the server. I can from my local network and using the local IP of the server, but I can't access from outside my own network.

Can anybody help?

Then why did you post in the Mac OS X Server forum and not the Mac OS X Leopard forum?

Either way it sounds like either port forwarding it not setup correctly or your ISP blocks FTP on their network. Many do, especially for residential accounts.

Hi Camelot,

You're right, I should have probably posted in a different section. Just that I thought more people would know about the issue in this one.

I have done the correct port forwarding according to my router manual. Also, i can't find any information related to my ISP blocking FTP. Is there anybody who could guide me through the whole process?

Getting really desperate...

I think it might even be a problem of not entering the right username and password. But which are they? Are they the username and password I have for my MAC OS system? Those don't seem to work. Another example: If I type http://gorgeoustouchftp.com (gorgeoustouchftp.com being the domain name I bought for the server and supposedly directed to it) in the web browser the I get a login window that says:

"To view this page you need to login to area DSL Router on gorgeoustouchftp.com:80" And I need to introduce a username and password. Again, I've tried entering the username and password of the router, also those of my server's system administrator... no luck

before acting on you Os it's better you check if routing packets from outside are correctly delivered to your ftp machine.. you can have a try with Hping2 utlity (check related site searching google) or somethin similar to check correct routing.
Of course look at Console log in utility and Log panel in PureFTPd on ftp machine.
Also you need to enable some rules on router/machine firewall at least for 10 ports for Ftp passive mode (es. 4010-4020) and fill them in PureFTPd.
Note that on some routers you need to create a virtual network first to enable some features.
Any logs to post here?

Unfortunately Hping2 utility is way out of my understanding, that is, i have no idea how to use it. Looking at logs in PureFTP I can see when I successfully connect to the server, that is, using local IP's. So I'm the problem is when trying to connect to it from outside the network. Actually, when I try to connect to my router using external IP with Fetch, I always get the same message "An FTP connection to "88.19.191.176" could not be opened because the FTP server has shut down... Server responded: "Login incorrect".

I can post logs from the router though I'm not sure there's any trace of me trying to connect from outside the network.

In any case, bear in mind the following info:

Server IP address: 88.19.191.176
LAN TCP/IP: 192.168.0.1
My workstation: 192.168.0.7
The comp I want to use as server: 192.168.0.3

it's not clear what happens to your connection except for a failed password attemp and some incorrect packet routing...I suggest you to :
1- check your Inbound rules on your router , here is a guide step by step about FTP on your netgear model http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/FR114P/FTP.ht m

2 - Are you running PureFtpd as MacOsX Superserver? What account didn't log in ? a system user account or a Pureftpd account (virtualftp group)?

I'm running PureFTP on regular MAC OS X... When I try logging in with Fetch using LAN IP, I can do it without problem from either system and PureFTP accounts. When trying to log in from external IP I won't succeed using neither...

I've also gone through those manuals that you sent me. So it all should work but it doesn't.

Notes for MacOS X users

To get Pure-FTPd authenticate against system users on MacOS X (at least since version 10.3) you need to use
PAM. In order to make PAM work you currently have to:

$ cd /usr/include
$ ln -s pam security

Then configure and build.

$ ./configure --with-pam <your other favorite options like --with-everything>
$ make install-strip

Create a /etc/xinetd.d/ftp file similar to this one:

service ftp
{
disable = no
socket_type = stream
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/local/sbin/pure-ftpd
server_args = -A -E –lpam
groups = yes
flags = REUSE
}

Create a /etc/pam.d/pure-ftpd file:

# pure-ftpd: auth account password session
auth required pam_nologin.so
auth sufficient pam_securityserver.so
auth sufficient pam_unix.so
auth required pam_deny.so
account required pam_permit.so
password required pam_deny.so
session required pam_uwtmp.so

Restart xinetd:

i've installed few minutes ago the latest PureFTPd version to make a try ,it's running on MacOsX 10.5.4 (iMac 2.4ghz) without no problem.
Leopard Os is very different from tiger or panther so maybe that document 'd be outdated.
I'd repeat this step
- correct rules on your netgear ( rules for a range of 10 ports used for passive mode + 21 to 192.168.0.3)
- reset pureftp installation and restart its assistant manager skipping anonymous user if not needed,
enable system users, accept default home locations, and group permissions.

If this went wrong, try with another service (ssh or afp) and look if logins works ,
in case of problems reset your netgear and repeat setup again...

I'm reaching the conclusion that the problem has little or nothing to do with PureFTP. If we forget about it and just try to have FTP access to my computer using the system name and password, which would the procedure be? Because I think that's the problem there...

you'd try macosx default ftp server , open system preferences , sharing pane and enable Documents sharing.. to select Ftp service click on Advanced and enable user accounts and folders.

No luck, That was all enabled beforehand. No problem connecting from within the network using local IP. However if I try the router's external IP it just doesn't let me...

ftp requires opening up the ephemeral port ranges on one or both ends of the connection all the way through (depending on the active or passive selection), and ftp transmits your user and password authentication information entirely in cleartext.

I'm somewhat surprised that the Netgear manual doesn't mention the port range detail, unless it leaves the ephemeral range open, or unless the firewall sniffs the ftp traffic itself. If you're really and seriously using ftp, might just dispense with your firewall given the cleartext passwords and the ephemeral range; it'll make the connection easier, too.

But if I can't dissuade you from opening up your network security and exposing your password, might I suggest you get something relatively simple and secure working first here, like sftp or ssh? Or something simple and insecure, such as telnet. Before you [tangle with ftp|http://64.223.189.234/node/530], that is.

I suspect you mean you installed and use PureFTPd Manager (includes PureFTPd)?

Also if you get it up and running you can add "-b" (without the " ") as an option using the GUI then you'll get a dialog if connecting from a web-browser and forget to add: login:password@ to get at your FTP server ( ftp://login:password@<server name>/).

We usually disable/remove PAM and use only the puredb (try logging in using root/<password> when PAM is enabled - if root is enable that is).

Do you have a "DMZ" IP configured?

Hi,

I have File Sharing and FTP enabled. Also tried opening all necessary ports in my firewall. I even tried ticking the DMZ box and directing to my server... Nothing seems to work. And it seems that the firewall is not letting connections through since I can connect and PureFTPd works fine within the LAN but not from outside it. The same message pops up: "Server not found; or server has shut down or login incorrect, etc..."

Can anybody guide me step by step so I can get this to work?
