can get on some websites

Hello,

I cant log onto some websites while using my macbook. For example, I could not log onto Macys.com and could not log into my banking center website after I put in my id and password for internet banking.

All my security settings are fine. I also tried doing the same things in Firefox with the same result. Please let me know what I am doing wrong.

Thanks..

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

What were you using to log into these sites before: Windows, or another Mac? If you were using Windows, I would guess that Macy's and your bank have designed their sites to work only on Windows, or a Mac if you have IE for Macintosh, which hasn't been available for several years now. Apparently their web team never heard of the Mac, Safari, or any other browser for Mac, so maybe they don't read that much.

You should try activating the Develop menu from Safari > Preferences > Advanced and then go to Develop > User Agent and select the IE 6 browser for Windows and try logging in then. It should work, but your mileage may vary.

Well, you still haven't said how you accessed these sites before, on Windows or another Mac? That's an important piece of information.

You might try clearing your cache and cookies (the Reset Safari in the File menu) and they trying that site immediately after that, using the IE 6 for Windows user agent I mentioned before. If that doesn't work and you get an error message, you should post the full text of that error, as it will also provide a clue. You should also try creating a new User Account on your Mac and try accessing those sites in Safari from that account. If that works, then it's a problem specific to your regular user account; if not, then it's a system-wide issue.

Post back with details.

Hi

Adding to Mulder's helpful questions, here are some others to consider:

Are the sites causing the problem exclusively secured or https sites? Are you using a proxy for your network access?

As you are having the same problem in Firefox and Safari, there may be something odd with your internet connection, or with your Internet Provider. Have you changed your Network settings recently? Are you using any 3rd party Internet Blocking program? Have you checked with your Internet Provider about possible problems on their end?

Hi,

I cleared the cache and reset safari, but no luck. I was using mac to access these sites in the past. I did change my internet provider about 3 weeks ago.

Here is the error message:
Safari can’t open the page “ https://onlinebanking.lasallebank.com/efs/servlet/efs/login-from-outside.jsp?sho rtname=sfb&longname=LaSalleMidwestOnline&variable=yes&pass=yes” because it can’t find the server “onlinebanking.lasallebank.com”.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Hi

If it were just Safari, I'd say DNS server numbers may help. Seems the problem is on the Internet Provider's side. Before calling them, unplug your cable box, then plug-in again. Also, if you are using a 3rd party router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed (you can consult the mfg. support section of their site). If no relief, call your Internet Provider.

With that said, adding DNS numbers to OS X's Network panel in System Preferences sometimes offers page loading relief for Safari. Go to System Preferences>Network. Highlight your internet connection on the left, then select "advanced". Click on the DNS panel and enter 4.2.2.1, then 4.2.2.2 (these are public codes from Verizon). Close the panel, then select "apply". Restart Safari.
