LaserWriter Pro 630 - Flashing Amber Low Toner and Paper Jam

Hello all,

I've been enjoying my LWP 630 for a couple years (I inherited it from my Grandfather who passed away a while back). I've noticed that this printer had been in the "shop" several times, not really sure why, but I found some paperwork showing this.

My problem is this: When I power it on, I get the normal all lights lit, then they all go out, and the printer warms up, and then goes quiet and all the lights are out. It wasn't until I turned of the lights in the room that I noticed that the low toner and paper jam LEDs' were just faintly blinking in unison.

Now, I have Googled for more info, and all I find is "printer needs service" (no kidding sherlock). 🙂

I purchased the service Apple service manual and these two lights flashing are not mentioned at all.

I know it's not the fuser, I can hit the service button and I get a perfect clean page will the lines. So, that tells me that toner and fuser are good.

Has anyone had this type of problem before? I would really like to get this printer going again, not only because it's nice to have a laser printer, but it does have sentimental value.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, forgot to mention that this printer needed a new toner cartridge, so I got one. The printer worked perfectly for the year I've had it working, then it stopped printing. I went into the basement where it is located (using ethernet) and that's where I found it with the flashing lights.

Those are likely to be a failure in its power-on self test. If you look in that section of the service manual, you should find the pattern. \[If it had made it all the way through, you would have the green LED on.]

Alternatively, if you have a Mac that can run Classic, fire up Apple Printer Utility and you will get a detailed message. If you get "Fixing Temperature Error", do not wait for it to be fixed. The printer is trying to tell you it has detected a temperature error in the "fixing" \[read Fuser] area.

Thanks for your suggestion, I will give this a shot over the weekend. Will I get this through Ethernet, or should I fire up the //ci with a serial cable...?

You should get the longer diagnostic messages over any medium you use to talk to the printer. If you do not have Apple printer utility available, it can be downloaded from the Older Software Downloads page.

I'm in OS 9.2.2, Appletalk on, connected (ethernet) directly to the printer, and I'm not getting any messages, nor do I know where to look.

Any more possible help? I'm on a B&W G3, so I do not have a serial cable, and my //ci has a dead pram battery.

What happens when you run Apple Printer Utility?
Can you examine the printer settings?
What page count is reported?

If the message is "fixing temperature malfunction", it is not trying to fix anything, but has detected a problem with the fixing circuitry (aka the fusing circuitry). The printer will not correct itself, no matter how long you wait.
