Background Changing

My desktop background keeps changing at awkward intervals. It's also not the gradual background change you get when the "Change picture: " option is checked. It's just a sudden change to something else. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.4), 2GB RAM, 250GB 5400 RPM HD, ATI Radeon X1600 w/ 256 MB GDDR3 and 802.11n Upgrade

delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and log out/in. this will reset the desktop picture to default state and hopefully fix the issues you are having.
