Safari cannot connect to server

After downloading safari when it launches I get error msg: cannot connect to server on my laptop. I got in fine with my desktop. Here is the error msg:

Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “ http://www.apple.com/startpage/” because it could not connect to the server “www.apple.com”.

Please help
