Folks, I have 2 cracks on my plastic casing and I have no idea how they occurred: (1st) on the top surface near the hinge and (2nd) on the underside near the hinge. I've called Apple and they have refused to fix them stating that the position of these cracks is not covered under my warrantee, even though they are less than a year old. So - unless someone from Apple rescues me I'm going to institute a holding repair. Any ideas on how to stop the cracks in their tracks?
I don't have a clue how to fix it but mine just recently started cracking too! This will be the second time I've sent my computer in. It cracked/splintered right at the front edge of the casing. My computer is around two years old.
The problem with the solution posted above is that it will cost a large amount of money (small cracks on both upper and lower casings). My Macbook is still under warranty but Apple has refused to fix the problem as the cracks are not in a place where they 'normally occur'. Any suggestions?
My computer had the same problem. I actually had to star putting little pieces of scotch tape on some parts of it. I could see where it was weakening and would eventually crack. Some pieces came off in slivers. I actually had my macbook in an Apple certified store (not a regular Apple store, they suck), to replace the hard drive and they replaced the whole top cover, free of charge. I'm sure you can get yours replaced for free as well. That is, if it's under applecare warranty
I don't have Applecare just a regular 1 year warranty. They should be the same in this regard. Apple said the cracks aren't in know cracking areas - but it's obvious that the plastic they are used in the Macbooks has problems.
Any advice on how to halt the cracks?
I'd be nervous about buying one until they fix the problem. Not up to BBC standards for sure.
I don't think there's anyway to prevent the cracks. I think a batch (or many) of macbooks were made with this faulty material. Since this problem seems to be common, I would think that they have fixed it with the newer macbooks. Same for the flickering displays
It seems that the plastic they used was faulty. Given the amount of traffic on this issue it is remarkable that they won't fix it even though it is 6 months old.
