Printing incomplete or partial pages using HP Deskjet 845C

Hello All,
My HP Deskjet 845C only wants to print a few lines at a time on each sheet of paper. For instance, an email in Mail that is a paragraph long will take 5 sheets of paper to print with a few lines of the email at the top of each sheet. This happens printing a PDF from Preview or Adobe Reader also.
Of course, HP is no help at all. I've replaced the USB cable. I've checked every setting that I could find.
No drivers on the HP site since they say the drivers are built into Leopard already.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the 845C, but I have a 895Cse. I went from Tiger to 10.5.4 last week and the printer did something like you mentioned: it would print one line of "garbage", then sucked-in another sheet of paper to print correctly. When the print job finished, the printer would be frozen and required to be turned off / on for the next print job.

I contacted HP and they said some older printers were having trouble with Leopard. They gave easy to understand instructions to, I believe, revert to older "drivers". I followed their instructions this morning and things seem to be operating correctly. I could forward their email to you if you are interested in looking it over.

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

There were some issues with the drivers preloaded on Leopard for a few of the older printers. Please follow the steps below to manually uninstall/reinstall with a different driver.

1. Remove the HP Print Drivers installed.

NOTE: If you have any other HP printers they may have to be reinstalled.

a. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).
b. Select Library.
c. Select Printers.
d. Single-click on the HP folder and drag it to the Trash.

2. Clearing Preferences:

a. Open the hard drive volume
b. Select Library.
c. Select Preferences.
d. Delete any file starting with Com.Apple.Print
e. Close the open window.
f. Open the hard drive volume.
g. Select Users.
h. Select your Username.
i. Select Library.
j. Select Preferences.
k. Delete any file starting with Com.Apple.Print.
l. Select By Host.
m. Delete any file starting with Com.Apple.Print.

3. Once the HP folder has been removed it is important to repair the disk permissions. Please complete the following steps:

a. Open the hard drive volume (by default labeled Macintosh HD).
b. Double-click Applications.
c. Double-click Utilities.
d. Double-click Disk Utility.
e. Single-click on the name of your hard drive located on the left (usually says Macintosh HD).
f. Click the FIRST AID tab at the top.
g. Select Repair Disk Permissions.
h. The process takes about 10 minutes depending on your system.
i. Restart the Macintosh by selecting Restart from the Apple menu.

Once you have restarted the Mac, download and install the driver from the following website.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=dj-13823-4 &lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=59864&os=219&lang=en

Once the drivers are installed, ensure the printer is plugged in through USB and follow the steps below to add the printer.

1. Click on the Apple icon and choose System Preferences.

2. Open the Print & Fax. If the printer is on the list, highlight it and hit the Minus(-) sign to remove it.

3. Click the Plus(+) sign to open the Printer Browser. Ensure that Default is selected at the top.

4. Find the printer on the list and click on Add.

This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.
