Serial port disappeared?

For the past few years I've used a USB-to-serial adapter (IOGear GUC232A) to attach my old Garmin GPS unit to my Mac for uploads and downloads. Worked fine using LoadMyTracks ( http://www.cluetrust.com/LoadMyTracks.html).

In the LoadMyTracks window, there is a pop-up menu selector to choose the port the GPS unit is attached to. I believe it used to say "Serial Port" or "USB Serial Port" or somesuch. It always worked, so I didn't pay too much attention.

A week or so ago I tried to use iSync to sync my phone over Bluetooth. Didn't work, iSync connected to the phone but said it didn't complete some operation.

But apparently iSync created some virtual serial ports? And somehow erased the port the USB-Serial adapter used, even though that had nothing to do with Bluetooth. I went to the Bluetooth control panel and was able to delete most of the superfluous non-working Bluetooth serial ports (except there's one called "Bluetooth-PDA-Sync" that can't be deleted).

But now LoadMyTracks no longer displays a valid serial port. The only one shown in the pulldown menu is "Bluetooth-PDA-Sync", which of course doesn't provide access to the USB-Serial port adapter, and so I get "No GPS device found".

I tried reloading both the IOGear serial port adapter driver package as well as LoadMyTracks, but neither helped. (I also did a complete system maintenance with Onyx and rebooted, just in case).

How do I get my original serial port back?

Mac G4/500MHz/AGP/Sawtooth, Mac OS X (10.4.11), I really gotta get a faster system.

Hi Richard,

Was it a Bluetooth Port originally?

Does it show in Network CP>Show:>Network Port Configurations?

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...

applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

The 5 things it does are...

Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions. 🙂
Besides, once you really, really need it... you can't install it!

Well, no, the original connection had nothing to do with Bluetooth. It was an IOgear USB-to-serial port adapter plugged into a USB port. The other end of the adapter cable is a D-style connector, but not the full-sized RS232 connector; I suspect it follows whatever standard used by the serial ports that used to be on the back of PCs. iSync was using Bluetooth to connect to my phone; that's the only place Bluetooth got involved, and that transaction should have had nothing to do with the USB-to-serial-to-GPS-unit stuff.

Much to my surprise, a grayed-out entry for "usbserial" does show up in the Network Port Configurations list. Curious. There isn't anything in /dev that has "usb" in it, although /dev/tty.Bluetooth-Modem and /dev/tty.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync both exist.

As I said, I ran Onyx, so most of the stuff Applejack would do has already been done. The first, it won't actually repair the startup disk but it did report that that disk isn't in need of repairs. I had it do the full suite of cleaning and wiping with the exception of erasing the .DS_Store files.

But I'll try running Applejack just the same.

Oh, this is embarrassing. Humiliating. When I saw your comment about moving it, I glanced at my USB hub and noticed with some consternation... the cable wasn't plugged in.

"Excuse me sir, but can you please just check and make sure it's plugged in?"

Apologies for the waste of time; thanks for the help!
